    Spay/Neuter laws

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has been involved with the grass-roots efforts to get these laws passed, in any state. Anybody out there who has experience with this? thanks!

    • Bronze

Nope, only been part of the opposition.  THESE LAWS DON'T WORK.

    • Bronze

Yes, they do work. And I intend on seeing that they become commonplace.

    Thanks anyways.

How's this for a plan: You worry about your dogs, and I'll take care of mine!

Well I'm so glad that you are taking upon yourself to try to run everyone elses lives.  Fortunately there are many of us that will fight your attempts to rid the world of dog and cats!

Actually, I'm afraid it's been proven that they don't work, for a multitude of reasons.  There's simply no enforceable way to force irresponsible owners to spay and neuter their pets (too bad... I wish there were), and unfortunately all these laws do is place unfair burdens and restrictions on responsible breeders and owners.  Education is really the only way to go if we really want to solve the pet overpopulation problem.  If you want more info on mandatory spay-neuter and why it doesn't work, just look on the AKC's website.

    Look folks,

I appreciate your zealous enthusiasm for what you believe and especially for the additional attention it will help draw to this thread.  I'm already deeply involved and knowledgeable about these laws, how they work, where they have been enacted, and where they are currently in the legislative process. Don't think that you can "educate" me or attempt to dissuade me... I'm not a newbie at this. As a part of my research, I have studied the stance of the opposing side, so I am familiar with your "arguments" as well.

I'm looking to find others with a common interest in pushing forward, and if y'all like to continue to post to this thread to draw more attention to it, that would be great. But don't get the impression that I'm going to sit here and debate you... I don't have the time for chat, as I am too involved in the serious processes of making change happen.

    Thanks!

In other words, don't confuse you with facts because your mind is made up?!

You'll never learn anything talking only with those who agree with you!

Really talking out of my hat here, but I wonder if there are any areas where there are free spays and neuters available to anyone who wants one.  Maybe that would actually impact the situation.

    • Bronze

Free, maybe not, but low cost definitely are available.  I know some of the animal shelters in the area do 'spay days' where they offer spays and neuters at a low cost.  I am all for finding good solutions to pet overpopulation, but actual laws are useless and a gross waste of our legislature's time, not to mention our tax dollars.  I'm not new at this either and have no problem with talking about this subject because it needs to be discussed.  People need to know why such laws are a big waste of time and completely misguided.

I would like to see low cost spay/neuter made more readily available to people because I do think it's a good way to get average people to spay/neuter their animals.  I do think the cost is a big deterrent for many because it really can get quite expensive.  It wouldn't fix the total problem but I believe it would be a good step in the right direction.

Here in the State of Florida the SPCA and Humanes Society does low cost spay and neuters year round for as little as 40 dollars I think.

It's important for a dog/cat owner to realize what they can handle. If they don't want to deal with the animal going into heat, if they don't want the responsibilities of raising and finding good and responsible homes for puppies then they should ABSOLUTELY get their animals "fixed".

However, I do agree with Powderhound, vets seem to charge so very much for their spays and neuters and I think that's why a lot of people just don't get their animals spayed or neutered. I think if they were made more readily available to the public at a low cost then people would get the job done.

DakotaMali, could you find me the contact name and phone numbers for the shelters doing the $40 s/n in Miami? I have a friend who keeps finding strays and of course they're never fixed and she can't find a low cost s/n clinic that will do it without a 6 month wait becausse they're so overbooked. Her vet wants $180 to do it, even though they're strays.

how exactly would spaying/neutering make someone a responsible owner? keeping the dog on the property, keeping the dog under leash or verbal control, keeping the dog from barking 24-7, taking the dog to obedience classes, getting routine vet care, feeding adequate diets, making fresh water available, grooming as needed. these make an owner responsible. whether the dog is altered or intact doesn't. why should i put my dog through major surgery at the whims of the legislators?
