foster pit bull attacks young girl

Dad fights off pit bull attacking his young daughter 08:51 AM PST on Friday, November 21, 2008 By DAVID KROUGH, kgw.com Staff Dad describes attack HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. -- A 7-year-old girl was rescued from an attacking pit bull by her father Wednesday afternoon in a Happy Valley backyard. Clackamas County deputy Jim Strovink said Jayda Kempas was playing on a tire swing while she and her dad, 31-year-old Steve Hehr of Gladstone, were visiting the home on Southeast 172nd, where the dog lived. Hehr told deputies he heard his daughter screaming and ran out back to find the pit bull clamped on to her leg, pulling her off the swing. Strovink said Hehr pried open the jaws of the dog with his hands and got it off of her, as 27-year-old Ian Tovar pulled Jayda to safety, gave her first aid and called 9-1-1.

Clackamas County Hehr was able to wrestle the dog, putting it in a headlock and eventually pinning it to the ground, but was bitten on the leg and in the chest. As he struggled to hold the pit bull down, deputies said 47-year-old William Bahler and Harrison took turns trying to subdue and kill the animal using an aluminum bat. But the vicious 90-pound-dog refused to yield, police said. A Clackamas deputy soon arrived to shoot and kill the dog. "I thought my fingers were gone, it was life or death to me," Hehr said. "My daughter's so small and the dog is so big so if it would have got my daughter off the swing, it would have been over."

Strovink said Jayda had severe cuts to both of her legs. She and her dad were taken to the hospital. Jayda was later moved to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland where she was to undergo surgery Thursday. Her father called her a “real trooper,” and that she was expected to recover and was in good spirits. The dog's owner was identified as 37-year-old Rick Harrison.

The Clinansmith family was acting as a foster home for the dog. The dog had been there about a week as they searched for a new home. Hehr dislocated his shoulder during the struggle and was bitten on his hands, chest, legs and arms. Hehr is a Staff Sergeant with the Oregon National Guard, and served one tour of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. "Had it not been for the father being present and pulling the dog from the child, that girl most probably would not have survived the attack," deputy Greg Martin said.      90 lbs? Indifferent That's not an APBT....that's a mix. Real (ie purebred) APBTs top out at maybe 70 at most, and even that's a very big one. I've never heard of a 90 lb true APBT.

     Terrible situation though :(

There are some pit bull "breeders" out there producing 100+ lb monsters, as if bigger is better.  Ugh.

Ditto so if that is the case with this dog I can imagine temperment wasnt a factor for breeding. Thiss ia true shame, that poor girl must be very traumatized and I hope she can overcome this horror. It dosnt sound as if this family was fit to be fostering a dog though. Who leaves their small child alone in the backyard with a unknown dog of that size? I would never! Especially with her dangling from a tire swing like a tug toy......I'm sorry but that Dad is a idiot. This dog should have also been better evaluated before being fostered.

    EXACTLY!!!

When I play tag with Samantha outside I put Cheyanne up because she doesnt understand she cant play with Samantha the same way she can with me.

Exactly - therefore a problem with the individual dog and the breeders fault (if it was a "purebred" pit bull) for purposefully breeding for the wrong reasons....and lord yes, wasn't the dog evaluated? You leave your child with a large dog you have only known for a small amount of time? Yikes.

I dont even leave Rory with my neices and nephews for fear of her wacking them with her tail or knocking them over to lick them to death, LOL.

But regarding this particular attack it makes me think of how A LOT of pit bull and bully owners use spring poles and flirt poles to exercise a dog. Tug of war is very common with big dogs and it makes me question wether he was outright vicious or had a extremley high prey drive.

I wonder because if he was actually vicous there should have been some other warning signs.

But if it was a prey drive turned on I can understand that too. A lil girl with a high pitched squeal running and jumping on a tire swing? Lil girls squeals of excitement is pretty arousing to a dog with high prey drive. Not to mention one who was so happy to be in a home and potentially pent up energy and lack of obediance.

    Ok....

1 - You never leave a dog of any size with a child alone. I supervise Taz(20lb mutt) and Sam(50lb Lab) when children are involoved. Always. Pitt's have a high prey-drive, normally, so having a small child playing in out of the question. And on a tire spring at that. Someone mention flirt and spring poles - that's an even higher risk. They don't know if this dog has been trained to just those or not.

2 - A 90lb Pit is not purebred. They have mastif in them. End of story. Pit's are sapposed to be between 30 and 60 lbs(but bigger and smaller is ok too).

3 - These people do not sound fit to foster. It sounds like they didn't know what the dog had been trained for. If you have a kid and you want to foster, I don't care what sort of experience you have, you don't need to foster a dog with a high prey drive - or any dog with suspected high prey drive. Every Pit I've ever met has a med to high prey drive. So - Pit's are off the list IMO for fostering with small kids in the house.

4 - A 90lb dog should not be fostered with a small child. Ever. To large IMO.

I feel sorry that this happened to the little girl.....very very sad.

The dog had been there for a whole WEEK and the little girl was hanging from a tire.

    Wow.

I just hope and pray that this girl dosnt develop a huge fear of dogs. I know the odds are they will preach to the public what horrible dogs pit bulls are and will believe it with their whole hearts.....thats what's a shame. How do you tell a girl of 7 years old or tell a ignorant father that this situation could have been avoided and the breed isnt bad?

    I dont think you can.

Well, the little girl might not grow up hating the breed despite what her parents say.

I was around that age when I was bitten in the face by a GSD.  I ended up getting 21 stitches and have three scars on the front and under my chin.  My mom became very uncomfortable around large dogs after that and every time I interacted or even talked about interacting with a dog the first thing she said was, "You didn't put your face near it, did you?"  She asked that several times after I got Sally, but gave up when she realized that I sleep with my dogs--lol.

However, I don't harbor any ill-will towards GSDs, and didn't even before I was "into" dogs.  I made a point *not* to put my face near a strange dog, and I would be a bit extra wary around GSDs, but I never hated them, and now I'm pretty much over the wariness....

Especially with her dangling from a tire swing like a tug toy......

I was going to say - don't some unsavoury types use something similar to train the dogs?  I only say because one family had THEIR pit bull removed precisely because the kids had a rope swing in their garden and authorities thought they used it to train the dog to get him in condition for fighting.

Good thoughts for the child... I hope she is ok.
