story about NC contribution to the overpopulation and euthanasia of dogs Sad

It would bother me as a citizen of a community that spent thousands of tax dollars on education and S/N programs to then NOT have my taxes reduced as a result of a good outcome but rather continue to be spent on the pups or small breeds of a state (NC) who refuses to address their own problems.  I know from personal bitter experience that NC's laws and enforcement of those laws is woefully behind that of other states (like the NE where they're sending their pups).  When dealing with them, if I had a dollar for everytime the phrase "Ma'am, we're a very rural state." and then explained to me (as though proud or something) of how it was legal for owners to euthanize their own dogs, I'd be a rich woman!

If it saves dogs and the receiving facilities aren't taxing the local taxpayers, I'm in support of it.  But I suspect that is not the case.  Sad

This is great:  ".....operators of nonprofit animal shelters and rescue groups make forays into North Carolina to pull the tail-wagging treasures out of private and public shelters to be adopted out of state. The practice has been credited with saving thousands of animals from being euthanized in North Carolina, where shelters kill an average of 75 percent of the animals they take in."  (( I would rather a puppy be moved and have a better chance at being adopted than being forced to stay in an overpopulated shelter - however I cannot say that NC is holding up their part of the "bargain" and enforcement, etc has become rather...relaxed...since))

This is NOT great: No one tracks the number of dogs that leave North Carolina to be adopted. The state veterinarian's office, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, can't even say exactly how many animals come into shelters each year, because it tracks only shelters that receive public funding -- and not all of those file the required annual reports. ((THIS is unacceptable...))

the homeless animal problem in this state is just horrifying and the euthanasia rates must be near the top in the US

I am no expert and have thoughts about things that can be done but mostly I am just aghast.  When I hear people AGAINST mandatory spay/neuter I am more than befuddled.

Every week the classified ads for dogs/cats is breath-taking - the bizarre mixes that someone is trying to say is a designer breed - today I saw the "cavalab" lab and cavalier king charles mix, there are the ubiquitous 5 and 6 week old pups for sale, and goodness knows what else.

This article for me just further highlighted how stupid things can be in this state - I love it in many ways but I swear the good ol' boys still run it like the population is under a million.

OK that's my vent done Angry

I'm glad if any of the dogs that will be killed get to live but would so rather see less being born

Trust me, the state vet's office staff that I spent hours on the phone with don't give a rat's a$$ about animal welfare in their state.  A more disinterested and apathetic bunch I've never met.  I'm sure someone will be along to sing their praises and jump to their defense but the fact that All Creatures Great and Small stayed in business as long as it has is a testament to their ineptitude.

(So shouldn't have read this thread!!! Angry )
