God bless you for that! Transport is becoming the biggest concern now with gas prices going up. Once upon a time people were willing and eager to take road trips for dogs - 100 miles or more one way! Can you imagine today? Now it's hard to find anyone who can do a 40 mile round trip. Totally understandable, I'm in the same position myself. If I have to use a large crate I have to drive the Queen Mary who gets about four MPG.

Bless everyone who can do transport! You are a breath of life to rescue at this time!!!

No one ever seems to need it around here though. I check often on the part of the forum that does the rescue and they are always much too far away. I know, the gas is expensive but it's not like it would be a daily thing. And, it would give me something to do, get me out a little. It seems lately my weekends are just running errands, paying bills, food shopping, blah, blah, blah!!!

You do live in a somewhat low volume area for general rescue. Have you tried applying formally to breed or specialty rescues as a volunteer?

Petfinder has forums also and there's rescuers setting up transports there alot of the time. It's wonderful of you to want to help!

Remember, the 2008 standard mileage for servicing a charitible organization is 14 cents per mile and is a charitable deduction on the individual's tax return.

This is big time activity for those in rescues. Mostly weekend volunteer work. Depending on where you live, you may be requested to help a lot or you may have to be really quick to volunteer for a Leg. I live in the general Chicago area and have a hard time getting Legs that pass through this area. But here is a start. There are both for hire transports and volunteer transports. The for hire is sometimes just the reimbursement of gas. A lot of times these transports criss-cross, overlap, and are in parallel. Being in touch with multiple transport groups helps put together the transport plan. Oh yeah, everything happens on the Thursday and Fridays before the transports, so if you are not flexible, then it may be a very frustrating experience.

I forgot about the yahoo groups - thanks Dave! It's been so long since I've had the ability to assist in this regard - and it used to be my favorite part of rescue! But with my arthritis and vertigo even a two hour drive alone is scary and painful and I have to have a really long break in between the outgoing and homeward bound trips.

Anyway, I used to be involved with a rescue railroad here - it was a blast! Such nice people and I got to meet lots of dogs of different breeds and I collected a lifetime's worth of experiences. I'll never forget the litter of French bulldogs I transported (just three) to a Frenchie specialty, then got a guided tour around the show and got to meet and play with the #1 Frenchie in the country and in fact in three countries. And from the sublime to the ridiculous, I will remember to my dying day, especially after my dogs have had a bit too much legumes, three hours on the road with a hapless pair of 40 pound farting Dachshunds.
