Oklahoma City - PETA's new TV ad, which lays the blame for the
deaths of countless "pound pups" squarely at the feet of pet stores
and breeders, will hit the Oklahoma City airwaves on Monday. Its
airing will coincide with a week-long series of dog shows sponsored
by the pro-breeding American Kennel Club (AKC). PETA's point? That
severely crowded animal shelters must euthanize millions of dogs and
cats every year, while the AKC encourages people to breed millions
more animals. The pull-no-punches ad--which has been rejected in
some markets because of its frank approach to the dog- and cat-
overpopulation crisis--will air during the Oprah Winfrey Show on
    KOCO-TV between 4 and 5 p.m.

The commercial comes a month after Oprah dedicated a broadcast to
exposing the cruelty o "puppy mills" and encouraged her massive
audience to adopt new four-legged members of their families only
from animal shelters. "I would never, ever [get] another pet now
without going to a shelter to do it," she told her audience.

In the ad, right after a family buys their new dog, a breeder pulls
a black body bag from behind his chair, thumps it down on his desk,
and announces, "Here's the dog you just killed." He explains to the
horrified family, "When you buy a dog from a breeder, you kill a dog
at the shelter." The ad concludes with this sobering
statistic: "Four million unadopted animals are killed in shelters
    every year. Adopt. Never Buy."

For every dog or cat purchased from a breeder or a pet store, an
animal awaiting adoption in an animal shelter loses his or her
chance of finding a loving home. And because breeders and pet stores
almost never require that the animals that they sell be sterilized,
many will have litters of their own--creating even more unwanted
animals. Nearly 8 million animals--many of them purebreds--are
abandoned at animal shelters every year in the U.S., and about 4
million of them must be euthanized for lack of good homes.

"Breeders churn out puppies for a buck and go so far as to oppose
spay/neuter laws that can save animals' lives," says PETA Vice
President Daphna Nachminovitch. "All dogs are created equal, but
millions of wonderful mixed-breed dogs across the country are paying
with their lives because of purebred mania."

Please pass on to others!!! We need to let KOCO TV hear from their viewers that we are not going to sit back and let Oklahomans be insulted and offended - this commercial is beyond offensive - it is also blatantly untrue.

If you haven't seen it, here is the link: *link removed, I won't even bother....youtube probably has it* Purebred dogs make up less than 27% of dogs in shelters across the country - the remainder are mixed breeds who are turned in for various reasons, the majority of which are behavior related or because of irresponsible ownership.

What we need is education and support for animal owners, not lambasting of purebred dog breeders and owners.

Below is the press release that states PETA will be airing a TV ad, which blames the number of dogs in shelters on purebred dog owners.

OAIA will issue a formal press release later today.

Here is what you can do:

The ABC affiliate here in OKC is KOCO. The webpage for public
    feedback is http://www.koco. com/station/ 1697159/detail. html

Find the drop down menu list for the person/department. I suggest
sending your comments to "management" .

Here is a small sample of what you can use to express your point of view:
    ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ __
    Dear Management of KOCO,

It was announced today by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that they have purchased time and will be distributing an advertisement, which depicts purebred dog owners and breeders as the reason for dogs that are in our community's animal shelters.

As a purebred dog owner I can assure you that the problem behind animals in these shelters cannot be attributed entirely to those who responsibly own or breed purebred dogs. It is a problem with irresponsible owners. To lay this problem at the feet of those who choose to own purebred dogs is discriminatory and untrue.

Oklahoma's history and economy is rich in animal agriculture and purebred dogs are a vital part of our culture. From hunting, law enforcement, search/rescue and disability services, purebred dogs play an important part in the lives of many of our citizens.

Choosing to air this advertisement KOCO would be turning it's back on a large percentage of viewers. Not only does this advertisement contain untruths but it also contains content presented in poor taste.

I ask that you refuse to air this advertisement. This advertisement does not truthfully explain the reasons for animals that are in our community's shelter and it targets a group of people, your viewers who are not the problem.

    Thank you for your consideration,

    Responsible dog owner
