    NON-COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY:

    1) A responsible breeder prohibits the sale of animals or the provision of stud services/brood matrons to commercial operations, including puppy mills, pet shops, brokers, laboratories, auctions, raffles, or contest giveaways.

    2) Motivation for breeding the Shetland Sheepdog should be the creation and improvement of the breed, rather than solely for financial gain.

The CSSA considers it unethical for any of its members to sell or supply any dogs or stud services/brood matrons to pet stores, wholesalers or brokers, raffles, lotteries, auctions, flea markets, laboratories or as give-away prizes.

Yay!  I guess that means if there's a sheltie breeder selling to pet stores or running a commercial operation, that would mean it's not a member of these associations, correct?  Or that said breeder is deliberately going against the position of its own breed club?

     Hmmmm...... interesting.

Actually, that statement is in the breed of ethics for most clubs in the AKC and UKC.  There are dogs from lines from people who have signed and lived by the code of ethics, usually because a puppy buyer did not live up to the original contract signed.  In many breed clubs, selling to commercial operations will get you removed from the roster.  Joining breed clubs can be challenging to say the least.  Sponsorship, ownership and in some cases titles are required to be acceptable for application.
