    Attention Petco Shoppers

This old but I certainly had no idea they held stock in or had negotiated with them. I need to pay more attention.

I for one had no idea PeTA held stock in Petco...wonder how much?

    NON PETA ARTICLE.

PeTA has now on their site an 'Agreement/cease fire' type thing they prominently display. Not an endorsement but more of a...I dunno...public victory shout that they got Petco to cave to some things and now aren't after them anymore.

Not gonna say anything really as always there are valid isssues with Petco no doubt...ends and means and justification, etc...posted purely for information's sake.

Probably not much.  It's a common tactic.  Owning any number of shares allows a group to put any thing that they want on the ballot during the annual shareholders meetings.  They can also get up and talk about their agenda during the annual meeting.  Gets them publicity.

Not gonna bite the PETA carrot, but I think it's a great way that major stockholders can have an influence on company policies.  Too bad the average stockholder owns too small a share of a given company to make a difference in their policies other than choosing to sell the stock if they disagree with a direction the company is taking, like say... offshoring of jobs to 3rd world countries to cut costs and pay subhumane wages just for the sake of the all-mighty dollar.

I guess that makes good business sense outside of this scenario....Interesting! And co's can't really control who buys stock right? So long as they have the proper funds of course.

Thing is though is that these groups aren't major stockholders.  They usually buy 100 or less shares.  It more is a blackmail thing.  Threaten boycotts etc. unless they change their business practices to they way that these groups thinks is correct.  Trust me small birds will be next on their list, then rodents, etc.  Remember Peta went after PetsMart about the type of mouse traps that they were using and the sales of small animals.

Here is some information as to what was going on with PetsMart.  http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=196265&p=factset04

Wow, they're going to boycott?  Sweet!  Then the rest of us won't have to put up with them when we shop!

Oh, wait....picketing.  Lovely.  Not sure I'm going to be able to hold my tongue if they picket my local store...

The article is old - PETA has turned their campaign to Petsmart and "made friends" with Petco, which kinda makes me want to boycott them now except ours closed LOL.
