I've adopted most of my dogs from the Hawaiian Humane Society, and they need donations... dog food, volunteers... that's a great point guys. To adopt a dog for $65 doesn't come close to covering it's veterinary care, let alone food and it's space in the shelter. $50 (or whatever you can afford) goes a long way in a shelter.
Moya - I'm not sure people were saying that it's not true, that people eat dogs, rather that your post is coming off rather accusatory towards an entire race of people and in that race specific genders and ages. That's where you'll raise some hackles.
Gina, you're right, Hawaii is the USA too... and most people don't look at your dog as food. In fact it's probably in the minority. A problem, yes.. but, most of the time the strangers coming to pet your dog really do think your dog is cute. Like anywhere, be careful that your dog is safe and contained, that's all you can do.
To point out, since I've moved, if my dogs were to get out, it wouldn't be people I'd worry about eating them, it'd be mountain lions, coyotes and predatory birds.
