    Texas- New Laws ??

I live in the DFW and was listening to the radio this morning. They were talking about new laws for petowners they plan on putting in place. I was very excited! The talked about limits to the amount of pets you can have. And the one that made me very happy was mandatory sterilization unless you are a registered breeder!!! :) Has anyone else heard of this?

nope can't say that I have...I know Austin and San Antone had some laws like that a while back. But nope...haven't heard a word.

I swear I heard it on Kidd Kraddick this morning. They were reading the news or something.... but I wasn't really paying attention until I heard that. Dang! I have been trying to find something for hours... can't find anything useful!

Oh I'm not doubting you heard it LOL...but laws have a process they go thru and as of yet there hasn't been a lot of chatter on the pet-law lists I am on about it...it may still be to come!

Perhaps this is what they were discussing? Seems like preliminary discussions are going on...nothing has been decided/implemented yet.

That must be it! :) Thank you!

And I didn't think you doubted me... it was killing me that I missed most of the story! :)

    Thank you!

I just read the article.. and agree with most of it. Or what I got from it. I am completely for the mandatory sterilization part. I think overpopulation is a big problem around here. In fact, my newest pup was aquired through someone who had an oops litter. Her dog wasn't fixed, in heat, and a male dog in the neighborhood jumped the fence...and you know the rest. (I don't support this..but the woman desperately needed to get rid of all her pets due to her landlord and threatened eviction. So I got Athena...for no charge). I guess to some people mandatory sterilization is too harsh and "unjustly restricting owners" but I think unless your a breeder (and if you are, why not be a registered breeder), why does it matter if you sterilize your pet?

I guess I do see the point one guy made by saying that it doesn't matter what laws are put in place, they are not enforced and people don't abide by them. My dogs are not registered. Of course, until recently I didn't even know I should have them registered... and now that I know, they will be.

New laws are not the only solution... they need to be enforced!

Yes forcing a dog to be neutered I believe is government intrusion.  Why should the government force my dogs to undergo an operation.

Registered breeder.  Well that depends of the restrictions/requrements needed.  Sometimes that means that the dogs must be kept as a commercial breeder would.  Out if a separate kennel facility and not in one's home.  Puppies must also be raised that way.  No thanks I like to get my puppies from a home raised environment not in a sterile kennel away from constant contact with people.  How many people could afford to build and man a seperate kennel.  Also I have seen where a registered breeder is considered a business which then brings into play zoning issues.  Can't have businesses in a residential neighborhood.  There goes the home hobby breeders.

Sounds to me like they have a problems with dogs and cats running loose.  Why don't they enforce the existing leash laws which I am sure they have.  Also provide low/no cost spay and neutering and practice Trap Neuter and Release.  Encourage people to neuter their dogs.  Use the carrot not the stick.

Think also of the enforcement cost and ability to enforce additional new laws.

    That was just my opinion...

and its all just in discussion so there are not a lot of details.

This sort of stuff is being proposed a number of places.  One has to look at all the unintended consequences and the impact to people that are good breeders.  Laws such as this could restrict some of the most respected people on this board from breeding their dogs.

Most of the time the people that are really the problem are just going to ignore the laws and continue doing what they are doing.

Which was the part of the article I said I agreed with.

I guess the reason I am not as affected by the sterilization is that I do it anyways. And I am more of a rescue advocate than anything.(Not to knock good breeders. I just prefer to rescue...as I don't care so much about purbred or anything.)

You know, I can't understand that!  Especially if you have a medium to large dog.  They bleed all over the place, how could you or why wouldn't you get them spayed?  What a mess!  I never did get my Tabitha fixed, I was going to try and breed her, but she never really 'grew up', and I know, I know...the problems she could have had w/ ovarian cancer, etc., but she's 14 now, so I don't worry about that now.  But, even with her on when she's in heat, it makes a mess on her humpy puppy!  Poor thing has a stain on its head!  Luckily she's a very clean dog, and very small, but i could not imagine if it was Misty!  Yuck!

I agree. We had a pug once we didn't get fixed, when I was kid. We had never had a dog and we didn't even know that happened! Yea... I wouldn't have a dog in my house unless they were fixed.

Don't have that problem with male dogs.  Besides that males don't have puppies so they don't contribute to the so called problem.

They don't?? Who gets the females pregnant? The "so called problem?"
