'Heroes' Actress Hayden Panettiere In Dolphin Cull Clash

TV star Hayden Panettiere has been involved in a violent confrontation with Japanese fishermen as she tried to disrupt their annual dolphin slaughter.

The 18-year-old actress, who stars in TV blockbuster Heroes, paddled out on a surfboard in an attempt to reach a pod of dolphins to stop them being driven into a nearby cove and killed.

But the six surfers, from Australia and the United States, were intercepted by a fishing boat before they could reach the dolphins.

The fishermen used the boat's propellers to block their way and at one point struck out with a boathook.

It was an ugly and potentially life-threatening confrontation that lasted more than 10 minutes before the surfers were forced to return to the beach.

I wasnt sure where to put this (since I think advocacy is for dogs only? Or no? Maybe move it there if thats the case - or not)

I was so upset by this video. Those poor dolphins! I understand livestock for livelyhood - but it feels excessive.

And seeing Hayden Panettiere there just makes her rise up a notch in my book. I like it when celebrities use their status for something good. I like it better when celebrities just do it because of pure human compassion.

The dolphin slaughter in Japan is one of the most horrible, horrifying, disgusting acts performed by the human race.

I raise, kill, and process my own food. I have no problem with sustenance farming, and hunting for food. This is neither. This is a mass slaughter of a highly intelligent species whose numbers are already depleted thanks to pollution and over-fishing.

I have been following the dolphin slaughter for years now, and some of the things that are done to these animals are vile. I have seen two dolphins, drug onto a dock and stuck with a knife to bleed slowly to death, use their last bit of strength to inch over to each other and attempt to comfort each other by caressing each other with their flippers. Heck, the only reason they're even able to slaughter as many of the dolphins as they are is that once one of their pod/family is caught, the other will NOT leave it. We exploit the fact that these animals form such intelligent, strong, loving bonds with each other and their families and use it against them, to profit off of their bodies. How human of us.

I'm not generally one for sensationalism when it comes to these issues, but this is one thing that has just always really, really struck a nerve with me. I find it hard to imagine many things more horrific than this.

The fact that those they don't kill are sent off to marine parks to dance and do little tricks while they slowly go insane and die in tiny tanks, all for the amusement of the very people who slaughtered and ate their children and their families, is absolutely wretched. We really, really need more awareness on this issue. I've found that most people don't even know that it goes on.
