    (Kiddo is fine!)

Fairly new handler...so probably operator error on this one. I know we have folks versed in K9 training...is it common for them simply to chase anyone running past? I always thought it was more of a "command" given and directed at a specific person...so perhaps a not so well trained K9 too?

Be interested in input from those familiar with k9's....

In some cases, the folks who are in the K9 units are not there due to dog sense or skills.  It can be senority or even just interest.  It is possible for dogs to take advantage of novice handlers and they do.  Yes dogs will respond to motion as well as work off a specific command.  In this case, the dog was likely not well managed at the moment of the incident.

Ah yes I have heard they know when someone isn't all the way there with being able to handle them, too smart!

I have seen them in those stiff leather muzzles at demonstrations, etc...often too..is that pretty standard?

None of the K9 folk I hang around with use muzzles for demos.  There was a black GSD up in Auglaize County that should have been muzzled when not working.  He was really a loose cannon.
