"Man convicted in animal abuse case
An Albuquerque man accused of repeatedly abusing animals could be spending a long time in jail.
A jury convicted him on more than 100 charges that could add up to decades behind bars.
The conviction of Mike Kassabji stems from a bust in December, when he was caught with 21 dogs stuffed into crates covered in urine and feces.
Last September a judge ordered Kassabji to stay away from all dogs after 13 of his pets were living in filth, but that didn't stop Kassabji, three moths later he was caught with 21 dogs stuffed in 3 small crates, covered in urine and feces.
That's the incident a jury convicted him of Tuesday.
Mayor Martin was quick to respond to the verdict.
"I am very pleased with the result. I'm pleased that it came down so quickly, the evidence was very clear and I think it sends a strong message to the community that if you abuse animals there's gonna be consequences," said Mayor Chavez.
Kassabji claims to be a dog breeder who lives off the sales of expensive purebred dogs, but the city says he's just a nuisance.
Now Kassabji could spend the next four decades paying for his crimes against animals.
"He's gonna do some time, he deserves to do time," said Mayor Chavez.
The judge in the case is waiting for a pre-sentencing report before deciding how long Kassabji will serve."
