    Important reason for withdrawing AB1634

As reported on  this weeks episode of  Animal Radio's show  #398 dated 7/14/07,  as stated by Mr Levine, one of the main contributing  factors that convinced him  to withdraw AB1634 this years, is the threats that he and his family were getting because of the bill...

    Anyone surprised, cause I'm not....

Gosh, good thing this guy wasn't around during the civil rights movement!

Here's the blurb...it says nothing directly about threats...

    NEWS UPDATE:
Assemblyman Withdraws Proposed Bill to Spay or Neuter
The assemblyman who proposed requiring that Californians spay or neuter their pets has temporarily withdrawn his proposed bill from consideration after becoming the object of personal attacks.
"I think we could have worked collaboratively toward a solution but instead it became a matter of name calling and everything under the sun to get people afraid of the measure and just finally created too much noise and too much fear," said Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, CA.
But, Levine remains committed to the issue and will make changes and bring it to a Senate vote in January.

Wow. A three term assemblyman had to endure the ordeal of being called names. Oh, the humanity!

Not that I think that name calling constitutes mature or effective behavior, but seriously? If stretching "name calling" into claims that he and his family were being theatened are a sample of the veracity his supporters, that probably explains quite a bit about why this proposed legislation failed.

He mentioned the threats to a radio interviewer.

He and his family's safety was threatened, according to what he said. . I don't think it is at all   funny, and it shows me the type of tactics that the opposition was using to try and defeat this bill.

Why haven't we seen anything from the media about "threats to his family".  Which members of his family were supposedly threatened anyway?  That would sure make good press against all the evil breeders!!!

Of course the news is reporting this.

Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, withdrew the measure, AB1634, Wednesday morning, before a key Senate committee vote that he was certain to lose.

Again the media must have been manipulated by the evil breeders as they aren't reporting the truth as told by AR radio.

Yeah and to think his buddies at PeTA and such are so NICE and respectful of people's privacy and personal space, when they protest LMBO...

And animal rights people NEVER use threats or force on their part.

I have many friends who work in biolabs who live every day with the possibility that some AR driven terrorist action will occur - though these days security is taken extremely seriously because bioterrorism has become such a real threat.

When I was in college, I had a friend whose dad was working in a lab in NY which was attacked. They came in after hours, attacked all the people (there were just a few), released the animals, and then firebombed the place. Her dad, who was a harmless little (but scary brilliant) guy who was trying to find a therapy for diabetes, was in the hospital for several days.

I think people like that don't deserve to have their opinions even heard, much less considered. But that doesn't mean that people who happen to share similar opinions also don't deserve to be heard or that their opinions are ipso facto invalid, assuming they aren't sympathetic to such tactics.

And that goes for both sides of any debate.

Although, I'm curious why the question of the threats come up now when the bill is dead - you'd think he'd be out there yelling defiance during the debate if he really was being threatened. I sure would. Oh well.

I hope everyone remembers this when (not if) he uses this as a springing board for national office.

ETA: My friend Brenda never got over that experience with her dad. She was not quite 17 and brilliant also and taking pre-med. She switched to psych, then dropped out entirely, and now is a career McDonald's manager.

Geez....if name calling is all it takes, people should be doing that when it comes to BSL!!!

I'm so sorry your friend had such a horrible experience. When an individual or organization resorts to terrorism they deserve harsh punishment. Even when someone is just name calling it seems to me they are doing so out of a weak position on the issue.

AB1634 had been ammended so many times and was so diluted, that it would have helped no one. Particularly not the animals it was intended to help.

I hope that at some point, those involved in rescue and those involved in responsible breeding can resolve enough differences to put the puppy millers out of business. If that one issue can be resolved there will be a whole lot less misery in the world and maybe JQP can be voluntarily convinced that it's a bad idea to let their dog have a litter of puppies--purebred or not. I have more hope for them than those who are motivated soley by greed.

    Sometimes.  Sometimes it means that
    (1)  they don't know to debate,
    (2)  they don't know how to keep their emotions in check, or
    (3)  they just have a screw loose.
