Petpac vs Judy Mancuso on CNN

They had a spokesman for Petpac on CNN debating Judy Mancuso on AB1634.  The guy from Petpac was beyond pathetic in my opinion. The only point  he was able to  get across at the very end, was that Lassie is against AB1634....    That's right,  Lassie.!!![sm=wavetowel.gif]

On the news they had the guy from Lassie and a Lassie look alike at the capitol today and the guy said "if there had been a law like this, Lassie would've never existed".  Now that's just a bunch of nonsense, but there are a ton of people that will buy into that.  Again, as I've said before, if the bill's bad, then let's talk about that but I get angry when they resort to theatrics and lies [8|]

Excuse me but that isn't a lie. Tell me exactly which exemption Weatherwax would be able to apply for to breed his collies.  By the way that is the current Lassie not a look alike.

Theatrics, What about Bob "come on down and let me sexually harrass you" Barker getting involved.

Lets not even start about the lies and distortions from Levine and Co.

The only thing this guy from Petpac could come up with, and by the way he had the "deer in the headlights Look" mastered while he was on, was this.  He claimed that everyone in California only spent a few cents to pay for the $250,000,000 yearly cost for storing and killing the animals in shelters, so they were really getting a bargain and probably could afford to pay more,  and therefore they didn't need a law for that reason. Not once did this person say anything at all about how sad it was that hundreds of thousands of animals had to be killed in the shelters every year, in fact he avoided even discussing that , despite the fact that both Judy Mancuso and Paula Zhan both brought it up several times during the discussion.  He sat there with a straight face and proclaimed himself an "animal lover" .  [sm=huh.gif]

Sorry - I didn't realize there was still a Lassie or a Lassie show.  Good to know since it was definitely a favorite of mine when growing up.  But why wouldn't the exemption for breeders allow him to breed his Collies?  Certainly it wouldn't be a cost factor.  It is a recognized breed, right?

He wouldn't qualify for any of the current exemptions.  Those dogs aren't AKC show champions.  The work that they do isn't defined in the current work standard.

I read that the current one is 7 years old and he is going to bred soon to work on the next generation of Lassie.

A remake of the original Lassie movie was released last year.

Okay, I'm just being lazy and could/should read the bill again, but if it's a collie and recognized as a breed by the AKC, then wouldn't they be eligible for the exemption.  Do you actually have to "show" the dog to get the exemption?

    Yes!!!

I believe that after the age of three years, the dog must have earned a championship. Or....be a service dog, or be a therapy dog, etc. There were plenty of exceptions.

Actually, the Weatherwaxes' dogs aren't AKC registered- they never have been. The original Lassie, Pal, was turned over to Rudd Weatherwax because the owner didn't want to pay the training bill. His papers weren't signed over, and no one is QUITE sure who he was bred by or his ancestry. (There's a pedigree on the Lassie fan site, but not everyone agrees that that's who he was, and the site is maintained by well... not dog people. There were some really dumb statements in their press release too.) And the current Lassie wouldn't even get a point in AKC conformation- he's WAY off standard. (I don't think he's a very attractive dog, but that's got less to do with his markings and mroe to do with his head shape/type.)
