Pit Bull extermination

I was informed today that right now in california they're trying to pass exterminating pit bulls. I find this both insane and cruel. I'm a strong believer that it is not the dog's fault that the owner wasn't responsible and that the way a dog is raised will dictate what he becomes, and that's not to say that even then, they cannot be rehabilitated.
If it's passed in california, what's to say it isn't passed where you live? These dogs are not a threat, yes they were bred for a specific purpose, but they have also become wonderful companions to people. Not to mention it isn't their fault, they are not aggressive when bred and raised differently. They require a dedicated owner and a strong relationship with people but if they are given that chance they make wonderful pets....
any thoughts?
I couldn't seem to find the actual thing they're trying to pass so if anyone does please feel free to post it.

Although people can be stupid, I believe this one is a hoax. It's been passing around for quite a while now. If you can track down names and contact info on the politicians trying to pass this, I'd like to make sure this isn't someone just looking to piss people off before getting myself all worked up without reason.

I am in California...and I have NOT heard anything about this...it would be all over the news if this was true...
