Home owner's insurance and your dog!

Home owner's insurance and your dog!  What do you think of the Insurance companies that will not insure you if you have a specific type of dog?  Do you think they have the right to do this?  Does your insurance company do it?  What companies are good that do not care what kind of dog you have?

That's a dang good question and it reminds me to call my Farmer's agt and ask about that in regards to my home owner's policy!  J

The company I went with this time does have the dog rule in place: no Rotts, Dobbies, GSD, Pits or mixes of those breeds!  I didn't know this until after my mortgage company paid the policy for this year.  I think I will look someplace else next year, even though I only have a Shih Tzu, I personally do not wish to support companies like this!

It's illegal here in Michigan for a company to deny or cancel,or refuse to renew a policy based on the breed of dog in the home, but they do charge a little extra. I pay extra for having Boss. When they asked me if I had a dog, the woman asked what breed of dog is it.. I automatically just said.. the first one on your list. But they do discount that extra rate a little bit if they are speutered and if you have proper containment such as fences, kennels, etc. and if they have been to obedience training.

I think it is unconscionable that insurers virtually sentence dogs to death this way.  An owner with a mortgage is required to insure, thus cannot keep the dog if they can't find insurance.  Personally, I don't have a mortgage, so would go without the da&^ insurance if I couldn't get it.  And, I'd probably sell my house and move to someplace like Michigan if I did have one.  There is a bill pending here to create the same protection.
If  you really want to stop this crap, it has to be a national movement.  Call your local state rep and ask that person to file legislation on your behalf to make it illegal for insurers to discriminate by breed!!!!

Firestorm, when you get your insurance next year, please do write to the company you are leaving - tell them what kind of dog you own and why you are leaving.
Dog owners really do need to stand together on this one.  The last time I owned a Dobe was in 1986, and I have no dogs now that would create a problem (although I have seen Aussies on at least one BSL list) but I support the right of law abiding citizens to own their breed of choice.

Spiritdogs, do you remember which state the Aussie was on the BSL list for?  Just curious... I have a friend here in Ohio who was cancelled by the same insurance company I use because her dog bit someone, even though no claim resulted.  I'm not sure of the circumstances of the bite incident. Also, I know what a BSL list is, just don't know what the acronym stands for.  Help?

I think it means Breed Specific Legislation
