    Any Ohio Plain Dealer people?

I know a few of you on this forum are from Ohio,, as I am.  Don't know how far the Cleveland Plain Dealer goes out,,but it has an article about our Amish Puppy Mills from Holmes County in it ON THE FRONT PAGE. I was happy that it made the front page,,,everyone needs to know what is happening here. BUT when I read it, I was surprised to see they said inspectors could find hardly any thing wrong with them, and they were clean and neat,,,etc etc etc.    Well, of coures they are still puppy mills,,,,with dogs in cages where they live their lives only to breed...and the Amish guy said they are livestock,,,just like farm animals.........
Wondered if there was anyone out there that read it and has been to these places?

It's not one we normally get but it is available here.  I'll pick one up in a bit and post later... Disappointed so far, though, at what you've reported.  With attitudes like that from authorities, this problem will never go away. Christi

Couldn't find a Plain Dealer in town but did find the article online.  Here's the link:  [linkhttp://www.cleveland.com/ohio/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1155458573283540.xml&coll=2]http://www.cleveland.com/ohio/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1155458573283540.xml&coll=2[/link] I'm wondering if the vet listed for the dog auction is biased toward the breeders because they are most likely her bread and butter.  I certainly hope not but it's a possibility.   The article briefly touched on this but I think that if the tourists who flock to Holmes county knew that it has more dog farms than dairy farms and what that means to the dog population it might actually have an impact on the tourism industry.  Berlin LIVES on the Amish exploiting themselves for profit.  It would be interesting if some of the local animal welfare groups could organize protests during peak tourism times.

Why not write Oprah? She should do something for the humane community, since she was a large part of giving CM the credibility he got from being on her show.  Maybe this time she can actually HELP some dogs...Or, maybe 60 minutes...

    Not a bad idea......
I'm trying to put an email together to the author of this article also,,,but waiting until I get a few comments about it.
Was hoping for a few Ohioians that have seen them in person, to give an opinion. I have not seen them to be honest.  To be more honest,, I don't have the heart or the guts! It breaks my heart to think of it.  I work at a vet and can't stand to see the faces of the pets in the kennels there when I walk in the back,,,and they are going home to happy owners!

I read an article on Holmes Co. a while back and it said that most people wouldn't let you near the dogs. I don't think this reporter got to see the typical dog farm.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer doesn't come out here.  How terriable that they cant find anything to shut them down.  No dog is a livestock that makes me sick. I hope they will keep a close eye on them and keep checking up on them.

I have some info regarding pending legislation to help with this problem here in Ohio.  I'm currently in contact with Sen. Gary Cates' office to clarify a few points in the bill.  I'll post it here in the Advocacy thread as soon as I have it... Christi
