Great news, it is so necessary, I think.  One shelter I vol'd for has a program of fostering dogs for folks in the service who will be deployed for long periods of time.  Most shelters insist people relinquish their dogs altogether, or they won't/can't help.

One of my good friends has two pits, and both she and her husband are in the Army, with a 2yr old daughter.  If they are both deployed at the same time, having someone to take their daughter is critical... but who would take the pitties?  They *HATE* Gracie, but I've said I would find a way to take them and create separate spaces for them apart from Gracie.  It's not easy!  (Please let it not happen right now, or I wouldn't be able to do it.)

Yes, I agree it's desperately needed.  One of my neighbors took in a boxer that belongs to friends deployed overseas.  Trouble is they aren't dog people and the dog is outside 24/7 all by himself.  He's developed some barrier aggression although he's a very sweet dog.  He cries and howls when they get home from work.  It breaks my heart. This type of place would have been so much better for this dog.  I've talked to them several times about how dogs are social animals and explained how he really needs time with them but they just look at me like I'm crazy.  To them, he has food and water and a safe place and that's all he needs.  His owners may be getting back a very messed up dog.

And of course so many dogs end up in shelters when their military families haven't made arrangements for them. :(

I haven't really done much research on this new dog sanctuary but from the quick reading I did it seems legit.   I'll be checking them out before I donate.
