Mindless Chatter - Weekend

    Mindless Chatter - Weekend

As I mentioned in the other thread, Sept. 11, yesterday, happens to be the birthday of DW's daughter, Elise. Well, I have another good thing to connect with Sept. 11. I got the job as electrical instructor at the special school in McKinney. I will be making just a few pennies shy of what I used to make plus outstanding benefits. It's a yearly salary figure. It's more than what I made last year and that other job didn't have bene's. This one has a comprehensive medical, holidays, etc.

I have to undergo some teacher training, which they pay for. That's my one weak point. I don't have academic or formal teacher training. But they were expecting that, as they were really looking for an instructor with field experience and I have a couple of decades of that. And it's a long-term job, a career. Their previous instructor was there for 15 years and then retired. They hired another instructor who was an engineer. He was adequate but didn't have the skills I have learned the hard way.

The program, which procides certification in a number of hard trades, such as electrical, dry wall, masonry, gives these young people a fighting chance at getting a job that will eventually pay well. These young people have had lives like I had. Being poor, many times without a father around, and some of these people haven't had the greatest of grades. So, they are high risk for not being able to go to college and would normally be lucky just to have unskilled labor jobs. Which is no shame, by itself. But given the chance to learn an actual skill that will get them a job that starts above minimum wage, even in a non-union environment such as Texas, many can excel.

I have envisioned myself teaching before and this is my chance to make that a reality.

And let this be a lesson to others that have doubts or hit low points. I was laid off 3-17-09 and went a few months without a job and went flat broke, something I haven't been in 25 years. Then got the job I have been working, at a lower pay rate. But you can't give up your hopes and dreams. Always recognize an opportunity when it comes your way. I was on several job search sites when I was unemployed. Several still send me email notifications of postings. And that's what this one was. And email about an electrical instructor position available in McKinney, Texas. All I had to do was respond with an email submitted resume, which I did.

That led to two interviews. One with the trades director, and then one, on Thursday evening with the head director of the facility. I had good interviews both times (obviously). Nor am I intimidated by the challenges these students can present. I accomplish the objective regardless of obstacles. And I think I can make a difference in some people's lives.

    WHOOOOHOOOOOO!

I am very very happy for you Ron. You will do well.

I have to take the sewing machine in for a oil change and tune up. Wonder if I can get my still sleeping husband to go with me?

Also my neighbor on the other side called me last night, she has a friend who works in meat. He gave her 24 frozen chickens, two boxes of 12. I get 1. There is only one problem, all 12 are stuck together (times 2). So for right now all of them are in my freezer waiting for the 2 of us to sledge hammer them apart :) Should be fun!

As I have said, even in electrical work, much of it is mechanical aptitude. How do you fit a square peg into a round hole? With a big hammer, of course. Have fun with it, too.

    WAY TO GO, RON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My neighbor & her husband are in the process of divorcing.  She has taken a liking to many, MANY other men as of late.  At 2:00 this morning, Bevo & Brutus rushed to our bedroom window & started barking.  Once I got them to stop, I looked out the window to see what the problem was, & I see, and hear ummmm, "extraciricular" activities going on in my neighbor's bedroom.  I attempted to make the dogs go back to bed, but they kept getting back up to go to the window & bark, so I just called the neighbor & asked her to close her blinds, & lower the noise a little bit.

This morning, she brought over muffins, & apologized for disturbing us.

Amanda, when are you going to write that book about how to live the exciting life? And how is your arm? And is Brutus doing good?

The place I was going to take my sewing maching is close...dang it. Will have to drop it off during the week. It was my grans machine so I try to make sure it is kept in tip top shape.

I have 60lbs of chicken thawing on my washer and freezer, they are frozen together solid. Will let them defrost a little bit and them pry them apart. I really do not want to argue about free food, but jeesh this is work!

Ok, off to clean house a bit and then going to drag my quilt top out...almost ready to piece it to the bottom..whoohooo.

Ron that's fantastic! It sounds like an amazing job!  I have to start looking for a job that pays better.  I like my job now but the pay is not great. At all.

I am busy cleaning the house today and doing laundry.  The FH is at a bird show, first one of the season - I hope he does well, no one knew who the judge was, which is strange because his profile said he was a champion breeder and exhibitor in Canada....and we all know each other.

I am heading out to dinner tonight with a friend I haven't seen in a long time, I had a quick coffee with her last night when she got in, and she seems to be doing well re: breakup, confused about it all but well.  We will get a bottle of wine, or four and s'more makings and have a campfire tonight I think Big Smile

Hey Dawn. You send that chicken over my way and Lillie and Fynn will gladly  pry them apart for you. Stick out tongue

    • Gold Top Dog

Hmmm....nooo, I think they are doing just fine, but thanks for the offer!

WooHoo, Ron!!  It's about time we had some good news around here.  Big Smile

Amanda, I agree with Dawn that your life would make a great book but no one would believe it's non-fiction! LOL  I hope you have a nice uneventful weekend, unless the event is a fun and happy one!

Dawn, good luck with that frozen bird problem.  It will all be worth it when you are feasting on your free chicken.  Wear gloves when you start separating or your hands will be as cold as the birds.  How's your hubby doing?

We are all feeling like we are in a dream.  This rain won't break our drought but in two days we got more rain than we have had in over a year.  A friend called me this morning and said now that he can finally plant some sort of graze for his cattle, he can't find any seed.  So many distributors sent all their seed stock back because no one was buying. :(  At least the coastal will start growing now and his cattle will have that to graze.

I've been doing the usual chores.  I discovered that I left a load of wash in the machine for three days.  Oops.  The dogs and I went for a nice walk earlier and they got so incredibly muddy.  Belle loves mud.  Right now, I do too!

Megan, how is your hand and how is Pi man doing?  Thinking of you.

Oh Ron, this makes MY heart just **SING**!!  This is absolutely marvelous ... and I'm SO glad you shared the *how* of how you got this job.  You kept your eyes open, but it wasn't like you were whining that the other job wasn't good enough for you.  You've made the best of what you could and you kept moving forward.

You *will* be good at this -- many, many times I've seen you turn an understanding ear to someone -- helping them see some better point, but not making them feel small.  You will do well -- not just to continue to help better yourself and form a career uniquely suited to *you*, but also in your stellar goal to help others move along a better path.

This absolutely rocks!!!  What a good reason to help turn September 11 into another reason to move forward -- learning from where we've come but never ceasing to try to do better (sometimes with nothing in our pockets or hearts but hope).

Yet another example of simply turning something bad into something ... good?  And muffins ... (as in stud ....) ok .. I'll stop now ... but I can't stop giggling

     Yay Ron! Congrats!

I had Subway for lunch today. Yum!

That's all I have to report. Sleep

I discovered that I left a load of wash in the machine for three days.  Oops.

I did that once...  maybe it was even more than 3 days.  It actually stunk rather badly and everything had to be re-washed.  Now I leave the lid up (to air out, etc) when it's empty and when it's down, I know I need to do something!

Dh just read me a coupon from a local pizza place "10% off senior citizens" -- wonder if we bought a senior, if we could use their pizza discount? LOL.

Lazy day, and boy it's rather nice.  Sammy's still got tummy troubles, but we're experimenting today to try to decide if it's canned, kibble, or him.  So far, looking to be the kibble but we still have a few more "tests."  Not looking forward to switching kibbles, but him horking (just found out that's a real word!) up 4 meals out of 6 certainly isn't working.

It's kind of nice outside today, around 70 and mildly cloudy.  Maybe a good day for a walk with the pupper.

Congrats, Ron.  Glad the long, dry spell is over for you.  I couldn't believe the weather when I woke up this a.m. - cloudy, overcast, thunder rumbles and even a few big drops of rain.  Not enough to do any good, but it must be 30+ degrees cooler today than it was yesterday. I'd really love a nice, big thunderstorm like we had in June.

Jackie, the hubby is doing great, thank you for asking.

I have prevailed, my fingers are stone cold numb but I have successfully seperated 24 chickens while still 98% frozen with minamal damage to the birds.

Our neighbors probably think my neighbor and I are nuts. We started by leaving the boxes out, covered in towels for about 5 hours, this melted the surface ice buildup, then we took them out one box at a time and slammed the boxes on the drive, and with the help of some plastic coated mallets managed to get them apart. Fun!
