Pirate got attacked by a pit bull :(

Until you are in this situation, you will never truly understand the situation. Meg, I'm so proud of you for not losing your mind, like me and was actually able to handle the situation. Give Pi some kisses and heres hoping your hand heals well. I don't know how much Pi weighs, but Toots weighs 25lbs and seeing a 60lb + dog pin your dog to the ground is the scariest sight and feeling in the world.

Thanks, everybody, for the support. Pirate has gotten a TON of cookies today, not to worry. We also had a nice, restful snuggle-fest on the couch today...I'm skipping class tonight because I feel worse today, than yesterday. I'm jealous, HE has the good pain medicine! The ER docs said I would be fine with Motrin, pfff!

Nik weighs about 12lbs and she had a lab pin her..... it is utterly terrifying.  I totally understand you "mama bear" statement... I picked up and threw that dog using just the collar.  Impressive feat of strength fueled by Mama Bear energy.

I hope your comment wasn't directed at me, Tiffy ;)

Yep, my mama bear instinct was a-ragin!

The sucky part is, I keep replaying the scenario in my mind - I had my mace but I don't think I would have been able to get a good shot at the pit...why I chose to use Pirate's stupid flexi instead of a flat leash...why I even chose to walk that route in the first place :( I'm definitely not walking outside of our complex anymore, without someone else to go with me.

This kind of reminds me of several years ago when the Malamute next door got out the front door and attacked my 35 lb Sammy...picked her up by the neck and shook the tar out of her.  The ER said it missed Sammys jugular by 1/2 inch...     The owner came out and was punching the dog with all his might...so much so that his watch flew off his arm. I got bit because I had my hand in the dogs face trying to push it from Sammy.... unlike you...I didn't think to kick as hard as I could.      It also came out the door and flew to Sammy....its intent was to kill her.    I have no idea if this dog was a problem dog before or after or not...they moved away not long after. Oh..except the owner came over a few days later to complain that his dog had been sick ever since that happened.......like "my dog got sick after biting your dog!"  Excuse me???

Last year my dear friend Donna was walking her dog Freeway...a pitbull mix thru her neighborhood..... a rotty and their other rotty mix attacked and almost killed Freeway.

Two years ago... a very nice lady that owned a very nice rescued Golden..had it locked in her fenced in yard....while my friend Annie walks her little Yorkie past their house each morning....the little Yorkie barks at this golden each morning as they are walking by.  One day...the Golden got out....ran and got the Yorkie and almost killed her...took lots of prayers and several thousand dollars to fix it.  Again...this was intent to kill obviously. Why dogs do this is beyond me....but it sure makes me know that I better be darn well on guard when another dog comes around mine, because I have to believe that many of our dogs might do the same thing.

One thing about this incident is that I have a hard time believing that the guy was afraid of his dog...afraid to get out and stop the dog from attacking.  Really....who is afraid of their dog?  I mean....who wouldn't natually get out and get their dog immediately???   Was he drunk? Was he on drugs? For sure he was an idiot.....but I can't believe he was afraid.    And if he knew his dog was so mean that even he was afraid...why have him in the car with the window all the way open????   I just think this guy was smoking something.  HE deserves to be arrested and locked away.....and if he does'nt get into some kind of trouble...something is really wrong here.  And I can't see how he could get away with rehoming it and getting it out of the picture AFTER it attacked.  How could the officials let that happen?

This guy is DEFINITELY responsible and should pay the price, whatever it may be, although, generally, I don't think penalties are stiff enough for these types of incidents. If I own a dog and I know that it's got aggression issues, I'm sure as hell not going to ride down the road with the windows down far enough for it to jump out - even if the dog doesn't have aggression issues I wouldn't ride down the road with the windows down that far - just plain stupid!! You just never know what's going to catch the dog's eye and cause it to react impulsively.

It's always sad to me when any dog faces the possibility of being euthanized.... BUT, if the dog cannot be rehabilitated, (and how many more attacks need to happen to be sure), then I think, for the sake of public safety *and* the dog, euthanasia is the only answer. JMO.

Just seeing this Megan.  I'm so sorry this happened to you and Pi.  Had a lump in my throat all the way though the thread.  I am sending you all of my healing vibes to share with Pirate.

Years ago, Emma and Teenie Weenie were attacked by three Laboradors, owned by a close neighbor. The incident was reported, but MY county has a three chance rule, if the animal isn't killed. The dogs were, eventually, put down, and it was a very happy day. My dogs didn't get a walk, until they were gone, and they came into my yard, repeatedly, attacking my fence.

It's better that fewer dogs and people are hurt. Honestly? Why rehab a dog that's obviously capable of serious injury when so many perfectly healthy dogs WITHOUT that capacity are euthanised for space? I never understood that part....

    • Gold Top Dog
We have a similar rule here - the dog has three chances. If this owner decides to get the dog that did this, back, they'll have to appear in court and be notified that they are one chance away from being deemed dangerous. If it happens again the dog is officially 'Deemed Dangerous', and on the third strike it's euth'd.

Dyan, I'm not sure if this dog has a history or not - it's honestly hard to tell since the dog isn't licensed and the owner is such a freaking liar.

    I agree 100%, Jennie.

I'm wondering if it wasn't that the guy was scared, but that he didn't care. He probably thinks it's cool that he's got a tough-guy dog that can injure and kill other dogs. I dunno...

I hope you're not as sore tomorrow.

Oh, and Pirate... chicks dig scars. Cool

I know your probably pissed at the dog (and owner) for what happend, i sure was at the the dog that attacked Bailey,  but i really hope the dog isnt destroyed. IMO, that dog doesnt deserve to die just because her owner is an idiot.

It's midnight and David and I just got home but I'm gonna address this one.  When Meg says Pi's wounds are "nasty" she means it.

Thanks, Callie, for explaining better than I could have. I completely understand where you are coming from, Spazzy - without seeing the damage and the attack first hand it's hard to judge, that's the problem with the internet...this dog had every intention of killing my dog, no doubt. IMO this dog is not safe in the general public. It would take an incredibly responsible person to contain her, safely, and this owner obviously isn't one. He had a dog like this in a SCHOOL ZONE - with at least 10-15 elementary age kids walking around. What would have happened if one of them had been caught up in this mess, even on accident?

I didnt mean that i dont believe you. Whatever that dogs intent was, a pit bull is going to leave more than just cuts and bruises. I realize how bad the attack was, but like i said its just my opinion that i dont think the dog should be killed for it. Im not trying to make it seem like the dog was justified in any way for what she did just because she has an idiot owner. What that dog did to you and Pirate is horrible, and what that guy didnt do (like help you or control his dog) is even worse. I think all life should be considered equal, so no matter what that dog did i really hope that the dog goes to someone who can handle and work with her, but I know that it probably wont happen and she will end up being euthanized. I hope Pirate gets through this ok, and i really hope you teach this guy a leason.
I cant believe they didnt give you pain meds. I got bit by a friends rottie a few years ago, punctures really do hurt.

I wish some of the big doggies from iDog were around so Pirate could have a chance to meet some good, gentle big guys.

Talus is putting on his "tough guy" collar (the one with the studs) and is on his way to take care of Pirate and Tiki...
I'm just waiting for his mohawk to dry....Stick out tongue

Seriously, I hope you guys are okay soon...and karma is a b.tch and this guy'll get what's coming to him....
