    Hobo Spiders vs Dog?!?!? HELP!

     OK -- Help.

    I'm totally freaked out.

Tonight, I noticed the dogs were hunting something in my hall... I looked to see if I could figure it out. I couldn't find anything.  So, I shrugged, figured it was a fly, or some such.

Then Aryn comes in carrying something.... i can SEE the legs hanging out of her mouth from a good 10 ft.  I of course scream... because I'm TOTALLY TERRIFIED OF SPIDERS!! ((I'm still shuddering and totally freaked out)) I get up my nerve, get a napkin, trade her for it.

I throw it away, but this was an ENORMOUS spider. I mean... totally freaking me out. So, I look it up.  Sure enough, the little bastage is a hobo spider which is poisonous.

The fact they are in my house isn't bad enough, I'm worried it bit one or all of the dogs!  Any suggestions? I'm doing benadryl right now.

    I'm SO FREAKED OUT!!

I have no spider knowledge but just wanted to let you know we are thinking of you and hope everyone is OK!

Thanks so much Lori.... i'm just beside myself.

I just got home from running to the store, turns out I had used most of my benadryl after the great wasp attack of 09... so I only had 2 doses left. I just dosed all three dogs, cause I'm not sure exactly what transpired.

Paige has been an absolute saint and while I was running to the store in a hysteria (I shudder every 2 seconds just thinking about the spider...) she found lots of information for me.   Apparently 50% of the time there is little to no reaction.  And these are tough dogs.... so, my hope is they should be fine.  But, being completely arachnapobic I'm in a straight up panic attack myself.  ... is thoughts of moving irrational!? LOL

    Ahhhhh!  Thanks again!

LOL - right!?  How freakin' terrifying are they!!!  *HUGE* ... I wonder if Aryn went on point first..... (I'm trying to relax so I can go to bed.... I think sleep may not happen tonight.)

I just wiki'd hobo spider and nearly screamed and fell off my chair Surprise

But, if it makes you feel any better:

However, they generally do not bite unless forced to protect themselves, and in the majority of cases the hobo spider does not actually inject venom when it does bite.[2]

    Edit (as an aside)

Killing all spiders by using insecticides can result in the proliferation of a single species when its competition disappears,

I am never killing a spider again. Indifferent

AAAHHH!!!  Just saw picture...yuck.  Hope everyone is doing ok.

How a human reacts and how a dog reacts may be different.  Continue to give the max dose of benedryl (1-2 mg/lb body weight-- but give the *two* for a bite -- given 2-3 times daily) -- and give it around the clock to help their bodies "deal".

But I'd be on the phone as soon as the vet opens in the morning -- they'll know exactly how to deal with it.  Some "poisons" can go differently for different species, so check with the vet.

I feel your pain, anyway -- we have banana spiders here in the south and I have LITERALLY see them as big as a dinner plate with a body as big as a softball.  *shudders in memory* -- there are just some things that shouldn't BE.   *sigh*

THAT would make me move house!! Surprise

    • Gold Top Dog

ugh yuck.  And I'm the spider slayer at my house (derek is terrified, and I'm not so I have to catch them), and those make me cringe!!!  eck

Lani I hope you got SOME sleep and that the pups are all fine.

It always scares me when B finds some new 'prey' I need to research in order to check safety issues on.  Absolutely terrifying

Um, yeah, that was fun learning waaay more than I ever wanted to know about Hobo spiders last night.

Lani - can you give us an update?  How are the puppers?

    • Gold Top Dog

Thanks so much guys -- sorry, got snarled up in a bunch of stuff this morning!

Pups seem to be fine!  WHEEEEE!  I benedryled them up, much to their chagrin. ... and checked on them during the night and finally again just now.... they seem to be OK.

They are the creepiest things... I noticed the hairy legs when I used the tissue to get it out of Aryn's mouth, which is what raised alarm bells. Cause, dude. THAT IS SO FREAKING CREEPY!!

Turns out something called a "Giant House Spider" could also look just like a hobo, so I've decided that's what this must be.  Because otherwise, I think I'd have to move.  While it's not as toxic, they are even bigger.  Which ... erm, ((SHUDDER)) I do not care for much.

I'm so afraid of spiders, if I'd seen the title of this thread (and I hadn't written it) I don't think I could have even opened the thread!!  So this has been really, really draining on me. I didn't get to sleep until late, in fact I think it was dawns early rise.  Dogs snored. I watched Criminal Minds.  Figure that one out! LOL Terrified of spiders but sociopaths, meh.

Thanks for the support guys -- I was totally freaking out.

Maybe I can make you all laugh now?  (or some of you may cancel that Floor-daaa vacation??)

A few years ago when McDonalds was running their last "Beanie Baby" give-away in kids meals?  There was ONE I wanted so I stopped at lunch to get a kid's meal.  Rather than dogs/cats, this series was other animals -- and I wanted the butterfly or something.

Ordered and pulled up at the window and JUST as the girl opens the window to take my money, a big ole banana spider crawls DOWN the side of the building towards her wndow.  I was literally SO speechless all I could do was gape and point and say "Nooooooooooooooo"

Now this one was only about 6-8" across (body about as big as a big ping pong ball), but it crawled right down her window, SHE SCREAMED and it went IN the restaurant via the window.

Of course, do I need to say all h$ll broke loose?

She had my $20 and I had no lunch, so I was just trying to be patient (with my window rolled up) waiting for the manager to sort things out.

EVENTUALLY the manager came to the window, apologized (for what?? HER getting freakin scared to death??? no problem!! *sigh*).  He gave me my $20 back and handed me a kid's meal free.

I opened it up (caring not a bit for the burger) and what do you think the toy inside was?

yep --- a spider.  No joke.  I showed the manager and I thought the poor man was going to cry.  No -- I mean it was a STUFFED Beanie Baby "spider".  But the real thing was about 3 times the size of the 'toy'.

Art imitates life?  Or ... Life in search of art??

     Dunno -- but I I haven't bought a kid's meal since!!

(Lani -- I'm right with you -- I'm not arachnaphobic -- I'm like Glenda and I hate snakes, and the one thing Floooor-daa has more of than spiders IS snakes.  yuck.  But dang, anything that big oughta have a license to live.)

Lol that story made me laugh so hard.

The worse thing about the bannana spiders though is not only do they get huge but they hang out in webs carefully placed to make human traps.  My worst spider experience was coming literally inches from walking face first into one that was hanging in between two trees in the woods.  They may seem really noticable and colorful when you see one on a building but in the woods... not near as easy to spot.  I love the fuzzy trantuals and ground spiders, but I dread the day I have the misfortune of walking face first int a banna spiders web.  Its one of the reasons I like to make someone taller walk infront of me when walking in dense woods in this state. Devil

Edit- Not all spiders are scary though.  Got to love the Christmas Angel Spider (beware clicking link will lead to adorable fake spider) who brings juicy crickets for all the good praying mantises every year.
