What makes a bad owner?

What do you say we call it quits and let it die in dignity?

We were posting at the same time. But i'm willing to call it quits,it'll just end up going round and round in circles anyway.

I agree with many of the items listed so far.  I would also include..
    Bad Owners
    1) Those that mutilate their dogs by cutting off their tails and cropping ears because they look cute, mean whatever that way. I understand many people had no choice as the breeder did this and I do not blame them.
    2)  Those that get dogs purely for shows or breeding and get rid of them after they no longer have use for them.

I find this entire post ingorant.
By your definition, I am a bad dog owner.  I did, in fact, make the choice to have my dog's ears cropped.  I also had his dewclaws removed, & I had him neutered.  I've pretty much "mutilated" him within an inch of his life.

It is my belief, that unless you own a cropped/docked breed, you should pass absolutely no judgement at all.  You have no idea exactly how much time, after care, & money go into cropping.  Along with no obvious knowledge of that breed's history.

wow, how did I miss this "winner" of a thread??

I'd love to "let it die", but the statement about cropping/docking having no purpose to the dog is patently false for a variety of breeds.  Those of us who have seen the damage experienced by traditionally docked tails which were left un-docked, have very viable reasons why our dogs are docked, for their own health.

Warning - blood in the picture attached.

Ok.  Since you guys are going to handle the crop/dock issue (I have no personal knowledge) I will handle the de-bark issue.

Tell me what the debark operation is since you think that it is cruel.

    How is it performed?
    How long does it take?
    Ever watched the procedure?
    What is the recovery time?
How painful is the operation for the dog?
Can the dog make noise after the surgery?
    What are the complications?
How does it affect the dogs temperment?
How does it affect their life expectancy?

This is where the slope starts to get slippery [&:]... In one person's opinion docking is cruel and that makes you a bad owner, yet that person leaves their dog unattended a yard all day, which other people think is irresponsible. Some people think that if you can't afford the best food then you're a bad owner. There are endless possibilities of ways to point the finger at others.

IMO it's not all so black and white as "good" and "bad"; there's a whole lot of gray area. [;)] I think for the most part people are doing the best they can. The only things that I think are truly, completely bad are those that would be criminal offenses. Other things may not be ideal, but again that's ALL about interpretation.

therein lies our point - anti-crop/dock propoents WANT to make it a criminal offense.

True, so I guess that's the shadiest gray of all the possible debates. That and declawing cats. Alright, I'm off to bed!

lol, me too - I can't even spell "proponents" after 3am, it seems!

We should leave things like cropping and docking right out of a thread like this. It's why I kept my post to a general idea of good or bad ownership rather than a list.
