flea and tick prevention

    Angry  having the same problem I use frontline plus on my dogs and they just had a bath the other day and yesterday I put on frontline plus they are still scratching so I took lucky in the bathroom since she seems to scratch more and I brushed and brushed her with the comb nothing got her on her back and only seen one flea crawling which I grabbed and put in the toilet.

    Brushed copper and daisy got nothing off them but they are scratching as well, I'm gonna switch to advantage when its time for meds again

    Callie have a question for you, since I just put on frontline plus could I also give them capstar as well?

    I have used Advantix and Heartguard since my dog was a baby.  I am not comfortable using them at all.  But we are in the woods daily and have major deer ticks issues as well as your normal garden variety ticks here.  Even with Advantix, I have pulled one or two off him in a season.  They are holding onto his fur and not imbedded in his skin though.  Given a choice I wouldn't poison my dog with these products.  Just the fact that applying the Advantix actually starts to dissolve my acrylic nails is scary enough.  Those are hard to get off without an Acetone soak for 40 minutes!  Given my dog is now having seizures I cringe putting the stuff on him.  And I have been stretching it to every six weeks rather than every four weeks.  And I stop using it during the winter.  I would avoid anything Hartz or Sargents brands which are over the counter.  They also make some other grocery brands for flea and tick control.  Research the company and complaints.  Thousands of dogs and cats have suffered from their products.;

    capstar only stays in the system for 24 hours - it's good for killing off an infestation. I would use a capstar, and then apply frontline/advantage if you are having a really bad problem.

    I guess *knock on wood* I'm just very lucky - I've used my advantage once this summer for Casey - and have no problems at all (save a tick problem at a house I was dog sitting for).

    If you are having problems with fleas in the house, and have carpet, you may want to put down some borax powder to help out. My house is all tile - and I think that helps a TON.

    Also, yes. The comfortis kills fleas after the bite. It's not a repelant - how would that even work when it's in the blood stream? Frontline and advantage use the oils and hair folicles to repel fleas. The clinic I work for carries it, and several clients use it - with good results, however, my vet still reccomends advantage.

    Yes you can use Capstar.  Capstar only stays in the body for 24 hours.  Now unlike Erica (who is over on the west coast of FL) I'm in the center of the state and this has just been THE WORST flea year I've seen in like 13 years.  It has been absolutely wicked.  It's the first time Frontline has failed me (no carpets here either).

    I'm actually going to have to find a company to come and spray the yard.  We did DE and it just was NOT enough.   Advantage works some better than Frontline but this has just been HORRIBLE this year.    Billy got groomed last weekend and you can actually SEE the fleas running all over him.

    And of course, since Billy had IMHA and chemicals can be IMHA triggers I've been literally in tears over this.  BUT at the same time -- a flea infestation can ALSO trigger IMHA again - so I can't just not do anything.

    I've done essential oil sprays, Capstar, Frontline Plus, Frontline spray, and Advantage.  I've put DE *on* the dogs too.    I just can't wait for time to pass enough to get thru this.  ugh

     I'm on the west side of Florida as well and It's bad for me frontline plus is just not working. I gotta get Daisy's nails cut again her nails grow so much I just had them cut not even 2 weeks ago and they need cutting again. I wish I had the guts to cut them myself. Well I'll pick up some capstar, gonna see about finding some Skin so soft.

    My grandmother used frontline and she tells me I put that on and all he does is scratch but he has no fleas i brush him everyday I told her there hiding lol  I brushed Daisy & Copper got nothing brushed Lucky got 1 flea.  I would love to get Luckys hair cut but I just can't leave her for hours again and I won't do it myself again lmao bad idea
