Question about birth control and the "monthly visitor"

There is no generic for Microgestin as Microgestin is the generic of another birth control pill.

Oh, so that means it shouldn't be too expensive to pay for myself, right? PRN means "as needed", right? Mine said 12 refills at the start and now has 5 or 6 left before I see my dr. again. Do some dr's actually use "PRN" instead of a set amount? That'd be nice.

PRN means as needed. Some doctors do write that for various reasons. I don't believe Microgestin is that expensive. It can't be more than $30 at cash price.

How strange that I find this today...I just had my yearly this morning, and my doctor wrote a new script for me to take Microgestin continuously (yay!).

Birth control pills aren't covered by my insurance through retail pharmacies, but they DO cover through mail-order, I just found out.  I'm super-excited, because I'll be saving money, as I've been paying out of pocket for Microgestin for 2 years now.

Cathy, I currently pay $24 each month for mine.

I'm hoping being on the pills continuously helps.  I still have bad cramps, and terrible mood swings.  Hopefully those will be alleviated, with the additional bonus that I won't have to deal with the monthly "present".

$24 wouldn't be bad at all since even with my insurance, I pay a $15 copay.

That would be nice!!  I went to the pharmacy earlier and I asked if I could get my script every 3 months and the lady said that she would call my doctor and get everything switched over!!  I now have 14 refills left until I have to go back for my annual (next year!)

Meilani, is there a generic form of Femcon Fe??  My insurance covers a little of the cost but I don't know what happened this time.  The insurance didn't pay any and I had to pay $60 for a one month supply.  If the insurance is going to stop covering this medicine, I am going to have to try a cheaper medicine.

There is no generic for Femcon Fe. There could be a lot of reasons why they are charging a higher copay. More than likely, it's probably on your insurances non-fomulary list. The non-formulary list is a list of medications that the insurance doesn't really want to cover, as they feel there are other cheaper alternatives, but they'll cover the medication and at a higher price. They probably pay a percentage of the cost and if the cost of Femcon Fe went up, and it's quite possible that it did as the price can go up or down from day to day, that can explain why you're paying a bit more. If you really want a definitive answer, you'd have to contact the insurance to find out why they're charging what they do and if it is on the non-formulary list, your best bet is asking them what medication similar to Femcon Fe is on their formulary list and run it by your doctor to see if he/she would be willing to switch you.
