What tags do your dogs wear?

My dogs are usually naked.  Depending on which collar I put on them, there *might* be an id tag on them.  Here, the rabies tag is useless.  The certificate is what matters.

no tags. Every dog wears an ID collar 24/7 which has a riveted on ID info plate. I find the dangling tags break off easily and also have the text worn down easily. I've found more than one set of dangling tags lost by other people and hope they noticed and didn't lose their dog before

We have started using dog collars with engraved buckles. So many tags have to be replaced from wear etc.

The microchip pet product sounds like a winner. We haven't looked into it yet.

I've lost mine once (not b/c they broke but b/c I take off the dangling ones when the dogs play and dropped them) and someone called the number on the tag to report them.  I thought that was very nice.  They left a message saying my tags were clipped to the fence at the park.

I've always wanted ID plates but we change collars a lot depending on the function and coat condition so I need to settle on collars...

Casey has his county license (required by the county), name tag and chip tag. I don't worry about him running off - BUT, AC does come to the dog park and they check tags, so he always has his on.

and I'm always a 'what if' type of person.... He's usually naked in the house though.

Only a slide-on ID tag (dog's name, home phone, vet phone, microchip brand - not the actual number). The way they play, I am afraid dangling tags would stay on the collars a long time. Their rabies tags are taped in their health file.

Thor has his rabies, license, ID and microchip tags, plus a blinkie for the night and a Virgin Mary medal...

We have to make a new one with our new cell phone numbers and try to add more info. He only once lost his set of tags and he found it!

rabies tag, ID tag, microchip tag, and license.  I hate it.  Ari's ALWAYS been obsessed with walking around with her tags in her mouth and it weighs down her collar and obviously they bother her at times.  BUT she's required by town law to be wearing at least her license and rabies tag and I cannot see her with an ID tag on.  PLUS I keep the microchip tag on in case she's found by someone who cannot scan her particular chip - b/c it has a phone number to call into.

There's no licensing in GA, mine have an ID tag and rabies...wondering now if they have to have the rabies tag on since some of you said it didn't matter....in the house they don't wear collars either.

Charlie has his license, rabies, and ID tag with DH's cell phone number.

In our county they have to be wearing the tag (the tag IS the license, not a piece of paper or a rabies certificate).  You can't keep it in your pocket it must be ON the dog.  I guess the logic is if the dog gets lost or escapes and you have the dog's tag, it doesn't do a lick of good.  The shelters are allowed to hold licensed dogs for longer and make more effort to find their owners.  In our county you cannot obtain the tag without a rabies certificate, so a dog wearing a current tag implies it has a current rabies certificate.  The rabies cert is actually the only thing required to obtain the license/tag.  Intact dogs cost a little bit more.

Ben has a tag with my contact info that sits under the handle of his collar (on the back of his neck, special collar).  Rabies isn't needed here, neither is a licence.

I used to leave the tags on the dogs and they were universally unreadable from scuffing and often broken off within six months. Then what? better to be able to produce the tags if needed. So they go in the drawer.

True but the rule is the rule.  They will fine you even if you have the tag in your hand.  They are coded per year by shape and color, so the number on the tag is more helpful if the dog ends up in a shelter and has no other ID, but they can tell based on the color and shape if it's a current license.  Also since you get a new one every year the wear is not that bad.  I put the license at the back so it gets the least worn.  Their ID tag in front is much better quality and have never worn down.

I think the law in Dallas is that pets must be wearing the city license tag, so mine do, but I agree that they are now illegible anyway.  They all have stainless steel tags with their names, our phone numbers, and "microchipped" on them.

Depending on where we go, the may wear more or fewer tags- for example, if i go back country camping, everyone wears every tag including the microchip tag "just in case".  I am aware that the collars could come off, but then even if someone found a collar it would be better than nothing.

The sad fact is, though, that more often than you might think, dog collars with rabies tags on them are STOLEN off of unattended dogs so that people who don't want to get shots can "fake it".  Don't believe it?  Call your local low-income vet and ask them how many people have needed a tag repacement for a stolen tag...
