help, she ate a wild rabbit

I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place but help

My foster puppy caught, killed and ate part of a wild rabbit. What do I do now??? What should I look out for? Can she get any illnesses from this? She's a 6 month old hound mix puppy. I've cleaned her up but am not sure what else to do.  Eww.

I'm not sure about illnesses, but generally my opinion of this is that a fresh kill is FAR better than the dog finding something that was already dead.  Ick!

How long ago did it happen?  If it were me I'd just keep an eye out to make sure she's feeling OK, and try (as much as possible) to prevent situations where it could happen again.  I'm impressed that a puppy managed to do that, actually, rabbits are quick!

It happened about 20 minutes before I posted. Yes it was fresh because it was still nice and warm, eww.

Thankfully none of the other dogs were involved but I'm pretty sure Tina helped her catch it. She's the one I've pulled off of birds before.

It was dark out, I didn't even see it happen. Most wildlife avoids my yard.

Haha, same here!  Ben did catch and swallow a field mouse once though.

I fostered a great dane mix puppy once that caught and killed a big mouse.. then brought it to me all proud. I squealed like a little girl and ran for my husband. The tail was still moving...

You need to be watching for worms.  I would suggest a couple of fecal samples over the next couple of weeks.  You may also wish to use some hairball remedy to make sure everything comes out just fine (dont expect a problem, but it cant hurt)

She's a parvo survivor and has been on metro(don't know how to spell it out) for the past few days due to stool issues.

What kind of worms am I looking for? I don't have any hairball remedy, and yes I'm sure she ate fur too. I just was not wrestling that piece out of her mouth. Okay, I would've wrestled it out but I couldn't catch her, she can run and crunch at the same time. (That has to be some kind of achievement right?)

Kaiser found, killed and ate a baby bird last night in the back yard.  I was out there cleaning up poo and saw him playing with something and by the time I realized what it was it was too late.  Tongue Tied  I tried to get him to leave it, but learned that we have a lot of work to do with that skill....  He kept running away with his "prize" and when I finally cornered him it was 1, 2, 3, gulp, gone.  Ick!

Dogs...  I love them, but they sure are gross sometimes.

tape worms are common in rabbits...

and you need to have tape worm wormer to get rid of them.. not regular wormer.  OTC tape wormer can run about $35+.. so i've noticed. and the last time i had to have one of my dogs treated it cost about that for one treatment lol so yeah... expensive and nasty little parasites...

rabbits can have other parasites and problems too but tapeworms i think are #1. signs of tape worms are skinny rear end, weight loss and white rice looking things in the poop.

as for bunnies being fast.. my jack russell can catch them but she's abnormally fast for having such short legs. she's never been sicced on them, its just... happened.. because we live in a wilderness.. but she's never ever eaten her kill, thankfully.

I raise my own chickens and ducks for dog food. i dont like it if they get ahold of something wild BECAUSE of the worms..

    You got that right!!

The head of the rescue has me giving her panacur and putting her on chicken and rice diet for the next two days...

Someone remind me again why I foster???

don't worry wild rabbbits are excellent food for dogs. I wouldn't do anything unless you actually see signs of worms later. My dogs have eaten many a wild rabbit.

i agree... tapeworms unchecked are BAD...but.. you will know if she has one before it gets to the BAD part. i know lots of people who feed their dogs nothing but wild rabbit. and these dogs are fit as they can be.

My Rex says "yummy" wish I could catch one of those wascally wabbits!

You worry to much... Nothing will happen to her, well, maybe she'll try to do it again when the chance comesWink.

I live near the area which is a hunting district, my beagle has eaten everything, from rabbits to dear, from those poor creatures he managed to catch himself to dead animals... Nothing ever happened. Except me yelling at him and washing his mouth with the utter disgust on my face...
