adopting!

Hey! Thanks for the name ideas....I like Madeline, but not Maddie so much, and Madeline by itself is a bit too long....and Mad...well, just isn't happy enough :) :). Right now we are thinking of naming her Quinn. We all like it, and it seems to suit the way she looks, we'll see if it suits the way she acts once we meet her. What do you guys think? It's not final yet....my family is awfully picky about pet names!

We are going to pick her up Sunday evening....I'm counting down the days!! I already have almost everything (including the crates) set up and ready. And it's only Wednesday. Can you tell I'm excited?? We have her scheduled in for a vet appointment on Tuesday, and tomorrow we are going to sign her up for obedience classes beginning on Oct. 3rd! I better make she we give the poor girl a minute to settle in though, eh?! Wish me luck with focusing on the tasks at hand in the next few days! (I usually end up getting distracted with the fresh stack of puppy training books, dog name sites, arranging her toys, etc....I'm hopeless!)

    Hey everyone,

Okay so this morning the lady from the rescue called and said that Kira (soon to be re-named Quinn) is NOT going to be driven down today. They said that this week she had some vaccines, and apparently reacted badly to them, and isn't feeling well, and they felt it would be best not to take her on the 12 hour trip with the other dogs. My dad was the one who talked to her on the phone, so I don't have any details about how she's feeling or when she will be able to come. She just told my dad she'd keep us posted on how Kira was doing. I'm so disapointed (I've been waiting for this day all week), but mostly I'm just worried, and I wish I knew how she was. I don't know when they'll be able to take her down, since they only schedule these "transports" once they have a bunch of dogs pre-adopted.

Is it normal for puppies to react sometimes to vaccines?? I guess this confirms my thoughts about a limited vaccine schedule for her!

Anyway, just generally feeling sad about the whole thing. I wish I could see the poor baby. I think I will email the rescue a minute, and just ask for them to update me as often as they can. I can't stand not knowing! Please send thoughts and prayers for our little girl.

I am so sorry to hear the news.  I know how disappointed you must be..   Keep us informed as to how she is feeling.   Happy thoughts for you and Quinn.

Well, I can hardly believe this is true, but last night we got a shocking call saying that Kira (Quinn) just didn't make it. She passed away some time yesterday afternoon. They said they still don't know whether it was a virus she caught, or a reaction to a vaccine. We are all so very disapointed. She seemed perfect. Finally we were able to move in a postive direction with another dog after losing our last baby, and now this! Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. We have decided to not give up, and we're going to start looking for another dog right away. We really need another baby to love!

Im so sorry this happened to you! Is there anything we can do to help?

I'm so sorry to hear this news.

Thanks everyone, I don't think there's anything you can do, unless you know of any little doggies in Southern Ontario who need a new home...preferably female, and preferably a spaniel cross!

I think the best thing for us to do now is pick ourselves up again and keep looking. We made the decision to adopt, and we can't let this setback stop us from finding a friend who needs us! So, I've been looking again on Petfinder (felt kinda weird, after being so sure we had found 'the one' with Kira). I did see a posting for a litter of spanielX's...mom is a spaniel/chocolate lab. I emailed the rescue, so far no response.

But I do have a bit of good news. The rescue co-ordinator who set up our adoption of Kira emailed us again and said they might be getting a litter of spaniel/beagle puppies in, and she was wondering if it would be okay if she contacted us if they did get them, since she really wants to adopt one of their dogs to our family (she said this was because she felt we would provide such a good home...always nice to get a compliment like that!). Anyway, of course I emailed her back and said SURE, let us know if you do get them. I don't know much at all about beagles.....any beagle owners here?? I think they're darn cuties though! I've heard they can be hard to train (especially with their recall...), but I'm not one to believe those type of generalizations....I prefer to go on what people who acually own them say, or what I know from meeting dogs of that breed. So, what do you guys know about beagles? To me, a spaniel/beagle cross sounds like a great mix...here's to hoping that the litter does come in! I'll keep you all posted.

Oh berberbear, I'm so sorry to read this. I was away for a few days and I feel awful Kira passed. Sad

The good thing is you guys are up to adopt a puppy and I hope she is on her way to you! Here we have a lot of beagles, so you will get lots of info. I know Gina has Susie and Nonny and there is also Charlie and Totti (with cow looking markings ~lol~) Go around and you will find them. Wink

Good luck and keep us posted!
