My Little Benny Needs Surgery (Weird Nail Pics added!!)

A few days ago I was grooming Benny; brushing him, checking paws, teeth, etc. and I found something in his back paw. He turned and cried at me when I touched it so I left it go. It was time for his annual checkup anyway so I made an appt. I thougght it looked like a toenail, but didn't think that was actually possible...it looks like something sticking out of his paw pad. It didn't seem to be bothering him; he wasn't favoring it in any way.

So the vet takes one look at it and then shows it to me...it's a TOE NAIL!!! It needs to be surgically removed before it grows any longer and starts to hurt him. Hopefully she can remove all of it so it doesn't grow back, because this is quite pricey. I'm also having his teeth taken care of because ever since before I got him he has had the worst breath. So she wants to clean them and get him on an antibiotic so that will hopefully help us out there also.

So next Tuesday I'll be handing over my dog and around $520 and hopefully all goes well. If you have any spare "good vibes" send them Benny's way. I know I'll be a nervous wreck until this is all over.

You mean it's a random toe nail just growing out of his paw? Owie! Poor Benny. Give him lots of luvins from me & you all have my good thoughts. Please let us know how it goes.

Yep, just randomly in the center of his paw coming out of the paw pad. Weird, huh?

BTW does anyone know where I can find info on this? How common it is and such? I can't seem to find anything.

Not so weird!

Our old girl Babe used to get them over various parts of her body. The vet said that she was producing something that made them grow but as long as they did not hurt her or were not in a dangerous place (whatever that may be??) to leave them alone.

She use to get one on her ear and the top of her leg, got to the point I would just yank them out (no pain) and put stop quick on them until it stopped bleeding.

Muffin the Intrepid got one on his toe one time (back foot) -- it was like this little spot that suddenly grew and it was hard and yep, looked like toenail material!

They aren't common but they aren't completely rare. Good luck. Having the teeth done was a GOOD idea. Poms are like shelties with those little narrow jaws - it makes bad teeth easier to happen.

I've heard of it, but never dealt/seen it.

Thanks everyone. I will try to get a pic of it later today after work. I was thinking about it anyway, but I don't know how much it will show up...he has such tiny feet (although this thing is HUGE!) Stick out tongue
