Advise on how to handle young neighbors and off leash dog

They moved in a few months ago two houses down.  Very young couple with a 3 year old (going on 30) child.  They barely watch her well enough in my opinion and have the child outside unattended more often than I would have ever done with my kids.  And the puppy they got....a pit bull female, who he told me his family was angry with them about because they had a young child etc.  Anyway that dog is about 8 months now.  Very people friendly because they have people coming and going all day and night in that house.  Husband suspects drug dealers because no one stays for more than a few minutes.  And some seedy looking characters at that!  So back to the pup named Porsche.  She is running lose without a collar all the time.  Daily when they are out with her or not.  They claim she slips off her collar in the yard but heck they finally put up a gate and fence last month and the pup is still out all over the place.  It is frustrating me to no end.  I have brought her back to them a dozen times.  My husband said take her in the garage here and call animal control on them.  But I don't really want to upset seedy neighbors.  I do not want to live in fear of retaliation!  I have enough worries in my life.  I was unloading Dublin earlier from our visit to Grandma's and Porsche came charging at him while he was jumping out of the hatch.  He freaked out.  My arm is broken from trying to hang on to him.  He dove at her and although he is highly social he doesn't do well on leash, on our property, by our car with a dog zipping around him.  He didn't bite but he was surely aggresively fending her off his driveway.  He was fine once she ran back off towards their own house.  He is very protective of me and our property.  He sees her running loose daily so she isn't a stranger to him.  So Porsche then ran into the road and we live on a main road thru the subdivision.  Some poor lady near had a heart attack when she flew out in to the road in front of her.  She slammed on her brakes in time but got out and was very angry and upset.  Went up to the owners and was hollering at them.  I was happy about that!  Should I report them? I think I should now that this lady freaked out on them.  They might not suspect me and rather suspect her.  Bad as that might be, I again and rather afraid of angering people who are shady.  Our local police are awful and probably won't care anyway.

Oh I should add they are just the type pit bull people don't like.  They have now started teaching Porshce to hang from their tree with a rope and ring thing.  Total sterotype bit bull owners.  That dog runs free because they do not exercise her at all.  Never walking her or anything.  I thank god my kids are older and don't ride bikes on the sidewalk anymore.  I would then have to deal with this problem big time.  I don't care if they had a beagle.  No off leash dogs should be allowed and it is against the law here.

Yes, you need to call AC. You should be able to do it without giving your name or information, if need be, call from a pay phone nearby.

    • Gold Top Dog

Definitely call now -- and frankly I'd call the neighborhood SPCA as well.  I'd be honest that you fear retaliation.  I'd also keep a record of when you call and whom you speak to.

I've recently had run ins with loose dogs on our road and finally succombed to calling Animal Control.  This is after having a few diplomatic conversations with the neighbors (not the seedy type, tho).

Anyway, I learned that in this county...I had to give my name and number...couldn't do it anonomously.

     Stupid dog owners!

As a pit bull owner I've got to say: call AC asap!

If she dosnt get into trouble she is going to get hit by a car or hurt.

As pit bull owners they have a added responsibility to keep her contained and of good manners. This just makes me irrate!

Don't fear them, if they suspect you its very easy to say "I've alwyas brought your dog back to your house" and leave it at that. They dont need to know you called AC.

Thanks, I realized I can call the county animal control versus the local police who I know won't care.  I am sure animal control will though.

I will call when they open tomorrow.

Report them for EVEYTHING you have mentioned.

#1  The dogs WILL be a danger, if not to a human than to other dogs, she isn't even a year and she was agrressive to your dog on your prpoerty. No That won't fly with me at all !!

#2 Even if she is sweet but not bright how would you have felt if a child, children...or even a teen had been driving that car and you had to watch them use the jaws of life to extract them ??  How would you feel if some one was killed or seriously injured by this loose dog darting out into traffic?

#3 If she is displying aggression now , and being encouraged in idiot sports it is only a matter of time till her first bite. As a Mom would you sleep better knowing you did not report lowlife neighbors but found out later the dog tore up the little girl ?

#4 If this child is not being watched and if ( I would agree with your DH) there are signs of drug activity REPORT IT !!   Your child is growing up there.  Do you need an act of violence, or a tragedy to slap yourself on the head and think about the V8 alternatives?  Again a simple notebook with items listed dates and times... Baby played for 2 hours in front uard without adult visible.  Baby unattended on hot afternoon for xyz hours. Baby apprears dirty and unchanged.Baby is up all hours do to the non stop traffic in and out of the house Date and Time date and time.... the authorities must look in to it!

Begin by spending two weeks watching the traffic, write down the make and lic number of cars coming over. You can note who is in it  SWF etc and then note times how long did they stay , what hours do they come by??  If for not other reason thne it may help clarify for yourself that this is not just a crummy family, it is in very strong likelyhood people who would not blink about selling drugs to the person who could harm your family or another.  When Your baby grows up are you going to resent some one who closes down a spot like that or thank them?

I am not a confrontational person, I hate it, But when my kids or pets are at risk you know I won't heasitate.   It is the biggest job I have and ever will have, to keep the kids safe.

I hate it that you have to deal with this but once you have 10 days to 2 weeks of watching the traffic pattern the police will understand that you are a citizen who is not going to grump and walk away. That you and your husband have values and care about the safety of your neighborhood, family and pets.

If you bring Child services and the narcotic department in your name will most likely never be needed. And even it it was,  sometimes we have to make ourselves unhappily involved to save kids and pets. Better the neighbors lose the dog or move than one of your other hard working neighbors end up dead, injured or ??? because no one wanted to report what is right in front of your face.

Heck send me a PM with addresses etc I will make the notifcations , not as strong an effort but still alerts authorites to the problem.

    Hugs and strong thoughts

I agree with everyone else: call AC.  However, bull breeds LOVE to hang from trees by their teeth.  Often, people use a tire, an inner tube (can you STILL buy these?) or something similar.  You don't have to TEACH them to do this; they will figure it out on their own.

    • Gold Top Dog

yeah report them. their kid sounds like she's being neglected... what if SHE had run out in front of that car? dogs are typically faster that 3 year olds.....

you may not have kids of your own living with you anymore but you still have a responsibility to keep idiots out of your neighbourhood for the kids that are still living around there.

what did they do when the driver starting yelling at them?

Our neighbors PB died an excruciating horrible death doing this. He snapped his own jaw/neck when his lower teeth became snagged in the tread. It was awful...most of all because I heard him hollering but it sounded like he wanted in the house and barked a ton anyways...I listened to him dying, and didn't know it, and that haunts me to this day.

His owners and I were not on good terms...he would jump their 4' fence to bark at my infant daughter and anyone else. I was terrified of that dog. so terrified we built a 6' wooden fence the DAY we moved in because he'd rampage in our backyard as well...but no dog deserved to go the way he did...it was awful.

I hope anyone that does this...checks the toy regularly and never allows it's use unsupervised.

I would quietly take the poor dog to a no-kill rescue next time it steps foot on your property. Calling animal control won't do anything, the dog needs new owners.

    • Gold Top Dog

advocating theft is not a good idea..... animal are property - and the OP could face jail time if she did this.....

call animal control. take the dog to the SPCA/HS as a stray - but don't allow her to keep running.

    • Gold Top Dog

dog has no ID and is running loose. Clearly a stray.

i've even heard of dogs falling while doing such things and breaking their backs.... the vet tech i was talking to while i had Kaydee in for an acupuncture sessions said that happened to her pit bull.. he fell and herniated a disk and was completely paralysed for three months.

I also think if you want your dog to do this... you need to be there with them.. and take the toy DOWN when fun time is over.... just my opinion.
