Obama said what?

I think that people make split second assumptions about names all the time.

Of course they do!  My name is Heather...doesn't ring of upper-level management now, does it?  And my best friend's name is Misty Dawn...people like to joke that it sounds like a stripper's name.  We're both, if I do say so myself, pretty intelligent people.  I think people just go a little too far with getting all defensive about Obama's name.  It obviously hasn't hurt him so far...although I did see a rather uplifting Gallup poll today that among registered voters...drum roll please...Obama and McCain are now TIED!  44%-44%.  Guess the uplift from the rock star European tour only lasted a few days...sad...

    One gun.....not quite clinging enough......

...but I think you can still be bitter......

    Ok, I'll try....

Hey, dgriego, did you say something in another thread about a bumper sticker about being a bitter American clinging to my guns and religion?  I need to get one of those....

You know some of you are something else....you defend a guy who threw his grandmother under the bus, the very same woman who was there for him all of his life.....he had no problem calling her a racist........Yikes

I am not defending Obama.  As I said earlier, ANY time someone makes jokes about peoples' names relative to a race or ethnicity I find it abhorrent.  I hear it more commonly around here regarding Jewish people/names.  Same principle applies.  I call people out on it all the time.  Some of the things I've heard come from my grandpa's mouth make me get up and leave.

I wonder if that's a generational thing--my grandpa was like that too (I'm 27 and I'm guessing you're around my age).  I spent a lot of time with my grandparents as a small child and had learned a number of ethnic slurs before my mother realized what was going on.  Mom said that lots of grandpa's friends growing up used them too.

Generational or not, I can't help but get infuriated.  It's not even so much the slurs, but the generalizations he makes.  He uses certain words for certain ethnic groups and to him, the words just indicate what they are and don't mean anything bad.  I guess I can allow him that as a generational thing.  But then he will say something like "[insert color of person here] are like kittens, cute when they are babies but nothing but trouble as adults" in which case he's not using a particular racial slur but being totally racist.

So, I should never utter anything negative about Obama, including his not so savory ties, but, it's ok for him to insult millions of Americans for owning bibles and guns......give me a break.....he is the master of insulting remarks. Based on that alone I can make an issue about his middle name. This one fact we know, middle name "Hussein", does he have facts that I clutch to my bible and my gun?

Just to point out, having a Scandinavian heritage I have heard it all......all the silly remarks right down to the Viking helmet deal.

And, "you sound just like Rush Limbaugh" as if it's an insult.  If you ever listen to the man, he is quite intelligent.

I can't comment on his intelligence since I have no idea, but he'll make stuff up to prove his point rather than bother to check facts. A couple of years ago (sorry, can't find the link) he was going off on a rant about how 75% of the money going into social programs was spent on administrative costs, and only 25% going to pay benefits. Not only was he wrong, he was SO wrong. Even if you switched his "statistics" he was still way off. There was a link to info from I think the Congressional Budget Office, or some other government agency, that showed exactly what the percentage was for each program. Most were around 5 or 6% going to administrative costs, with a couple even less than that, and the highest program was less than 20%. So instead of only 25% going to pay benefits, at least 80% is, and for many programs, much more than that. But that factoid doesn't fit in with his preconceived notion, and that of many of his listeners, that your tax dollars are being frittered away on overhead.

So smart or not, he's not always giving his listeners factual information and if you care about that sort of thing you should check out what he says for yourself. If you need to make stuff up to prove your point, it's a sign that it won't hold up on its own merits.

     - people support Obama because of his celebrity image.

Actually, I  think this is backwards.  People don't support Obama because of his celebrity status, rather he has achieved a certain amount of celebrity status because of the tremendous amount of support he has garnered. As far as doing things to irritate/annoy the other side ... I'll admit to that. Big Smile I'm now proudly sporting a bumber sticker that says "Please Spay and Neuter Your Republicans." Immature?  Maybe.  But it both fits in with my "dog" stuff and makes getting stuck in traffic on I-80 or I-5 a heck of a lot more fun. Besides, that's a sticker that I can leave on even after the election.

One example is all you have?

We just established earlier that the very left CNN network posted an article that was not so accurate, or maybe half accurate at the time and never corrected it or updated it.......when ya spin the truth.........

Maybe she was. How is stating the truth throwing her under the bus? That doesn't mean he didn't love her, or that she wasn't a good person in other ways. Should we pretend that the people we love have no faults?

He doesn't have to pretend that she has no faults, but he also doesn't have to publicly expose them for political purposes.  That's just repulsive.  Hell of a "thank you" to the woman who helped raise you......

No, that one just immediately jumped to mind because it was so egregious. Mediamatters is full of them, with complete transcripts and audio clips and not taken out of context. I'm going out to dinner shortly and I can't be bothered to find more for you. If you care you can find them yourself. Or you can just accept whatever he says as the truth, no skin off my nose.

Yeah, she was such a racist that she raised him.....isn't that what he stated......like I said, you guys are something else!

Let's just assume she was, him bringing that up for political gain, shows me what he is made of!

Sure, crap.  Just like every other politician.  I just happen to like the crap he's spouting more than the crap McCain is spouting.

IDK, I was very close with my grandparents and grandma in particular, so people who publicly drag their grandmothers through the mud for their own personal gain make me want to barf....
