Cart or wagon pulling

we haven't ventured out yet. I want them completely comfy in the yard. I keep them on leash too.  There is a part in my vid though where I let the girls 'drive' and they walk along & follow me.

I've got one of those red Radio Flyer, metal wagons......it needs oil on the wheel gears, but other then that, it's in OK shape - how could I fit it up??

    • Gold Top Dog

if i was going to use one dog I'd make the shafts from one long piece of EMT condiut. like 1/2" size, something not too heavy, and then bend it into a U shape, I read that you could use a tree to help bend it if you dont have a pipe bender.  If you have bamboo, you could easily make one out of bamboo.  Mine was free :) I found the bamboo really easy to work with.

I saw that someone had used tube clamps for the brakes on the shafts, I thought that was a great idea.

I traded a friend a Nintendo DS for her radio flyer wagon that has the wooden rails on it. Big Smile

I had found a website that I book marked that showed how you could make the shaft for the wagon but JJ redid his computer so I will have to find it again.  All you had to do was get some PVC piping and do what the website said. I had a neighbor that was gonna make the shaft for me when I get the materials. I got Lillie a harness that's a little too big but should fit Fynn just right. Will have to get Lillie one that fits and maybe Joker one too.

I done got Lillie used to pulling the wagon with Samantha in last summer so all I got to do it get a harness that fits her.

    But, what about the handle??

When I had Tuck, I put a regular hanress on him and then tied a leash to the handle. And my neice was little then, she weighted like 20lbs, and she rode around in the wagon while Tucker pulled her around!

But, I'd rather ditch the handle, it's long and metal and rusted, and probably very un comfortable when it rams a dog's butt. Huh?

The fit of the harness and position of the shaft is very important.  If the dog isn't comfortable then the experience is negative.  I would remove the handle off the wagon for fear it would fall and scare River.  River does both draft and pulling and loves it.

ya you need to take the handle all the way off.

here's the vid of my girls. I have Amber trailing at the back for extra exercise ( she's a tubby little thing), but then she rides on the wagon every so often.I think they'll be much happier when i have thr right harness', and more straps, I improvised with a coupler hooked in the middle of the tongue

I needed to test it out before I spent $120 on harness'!

You take the handle and the whole bar off of the wagon when putting the shaft on. Or you could always order a shaft instead of make one. But the ones I was looking at the cheapest for 100 bucks. So um for the 10-20 bucks it'll cost to make one I will go that route. Cart pulling is just something to do for a little fun and put some muscle on Lillie around here.

haha!! it's easy really! especially with bamboo, the holes were drilled really easily. I was so impressed with myself that I made that thing outta junk, I didn't buy a thing for it!  I need to trim the end off the front a little bit, might shove a tennis ball over it so it's a bit safer. Would like to change out all the chain parts for nylon straps to lower the weight of it. It's pretty light though.

I could post some close up pics of the tongue to show how it's all put together.

Does anyone have a website for how-to make one?(cart)
