Brindle Pit Bull Hair Problem?

Listen to SpicyBulldog, she has much experience with the breed as do I but she pretty much summed it up correctly.

What kind of papers do these dogs have? I ask becasue it sounds like he is charging a bit for them and if you could ask him what their bloodlines are I could help you with that, I'm pretty knowledgable with bloodlines.

It sounds to me like a breeder who got in over his head and he is looking for people to pawn his dogs off to. Hopefully with the bloodline and where the dogs is registered we can help you know why he is charging so much.

And just incase it hasnt been clarified enough: if he is advertising a color as a commodity he is a back yard breeder. If he boasts "red nose" or "brindle" he is ignorant because its a color ONLY and has no reflection or meaning as to the quality of the dogs.

Oh yeah good points. I must have missed the price tag.

Also if we know the bloodline to we might be able to help on any type of health concerns or temperament associated with that line too.

Im not sure if he has had worm shots, vaccines but i will be sure to ask when i go and get the dog.

Wormers are oral meds - not shots.  By now the pup should have had his puppy vaccines and his rabies.  You need to get written documentation of the vaccines so you don't have to repeat them.

Also find out if the pup is on heartworm "preventatives".  Get it in writing that you can return the pup if it is heartworm positive.  Treatment to kill adult heartworms is expensive and very hard on the dog.

NOTE:  Monthly heartworm "preventatives" are pesticides that kill any young larvae present at the time the "preventative" is given.  There is no future action.

Absolutely do not get the ProHeart6 heartworm shot!!  This is an "improved version" of a shot that killed or destroyed the health of many dogs about 5 years ago before it was taken off the market.  It puts 6 months worth of pesticide in the dog's system with no antidote available if the dog reacts to it.

But i guess a dog 8 months old has played with people, and other dogs.

Do not make assumptions!!  Ask how much socialization the pup has had.  Find out how much (if any) dog aggression the pup has shown so far.

    • Gold Top Dog

the whole thing just sounds bizarre- the guy keeps the pups for eight months then suddenly they "have to go ASAP" but he's apparently asking for a considerable sum of money yet willing to sell to someone who can't come up that money and well if you can't afford a purchase price you can't afford an emergency visit to the vet and yet the purchaser is being accepted AND has apparently never even met the dog in question????

    • Gold Top Dog

First of all, I am not sure why, but I really don't like the picture of those dogs.  There's something about it just niggling me, can't put my finger on it.

    gahustle
(the owner is having to get rid of them because, he's had them sine november when they were born. They already have other dogs and not much room for 2 more small pups.)

I don't understand this part.   There are at least FIVE in the pic I can see - is this YOUR dog and his littermates then, at a very young age?  And then the TWO more are more recent?  Is this person a foster home or a breeder or just someone who has never bothered to get their animals fixed?

If they are a breeder, then - how often are they breeding????  If these were intentional litters, then is the mother the same?  Is the sire the same?  MASSIVE red flag - 2 breedings in such a short span of time says VERY UNETHICAL BREEDER to me.... run a mile and don't look back.  Don't line their pockets with your hard earned cash just so they can continue to contribute to the pit bull problem.  Pit bull pups (well any pup, but Pits ESPECIALLY) should ONLY be sourced from the most responsible people, for obvious reasons.

Have you visited these dogs yet?  What were the living conditions like?  Were they clean, pleasant smelling, were there any signs of parasites for example?  How well does "your" dog play with the others?  How often is he exercised and taken into the outside world.  How much training has he had, has he been put through a class of any sort?

I also wonder that he wasn't able to keep them clean.  Dogs don't NEED regular baths, unless they

    a) have daily romps in extremely filthy areas,

    b) live in filthy conditions, or

    c) have a skin condition (like demodex) that would need treating with medicated shampoo.  I bathe my own dogs once or twice a year.  I have a friend with a German Shepherd who is only bathed when he is blowing his coat, because it makes it a bit easier to control the hair, not because he is dirty.  So that is also a very big, bright red flag to me.

The dog was born in november so the pup im getting is a old enough and big enough. Im not sure if he has had worm shots, vaccines but i will be sure to ask when i go and get the dog. I will be taking the dog to the vet of course. But i guess a dog 8 months old has played with people, and other dogs.

PLEASE don't "guess".  You simply cannot AFFORD to assume anything, except perhaps, that this dog that you are getting will be dog aggressive when he reaches maturity.  Most terriers are, to some degree, especially males.  Intensive socialisation and training are necessary when the dog is very young to decrease the chances of dog aggression occurring later down the line.  As you can appreciate, with a dog as powerful as a pit, dog aggression is very much a problem and the onus is on his carer to ensure that no tragedy happens.  This really cannot be stressed enough.

I wish you luck with whatever you decide.... but I would strongly suggest reconsidering this particular dog, at least until you have done some more research and grilled his breeder.

There are alot of advice here since yesterday, and a LOT of typing but the dog is already home. havent had time to read any new posts.

    • Gold Top Dog

He is cute but he looks younger than 8ths old to me Big Smile  That's JMO though.

What was the hair problem?  Did you find out?

    • Gold Top Dog

not on expert on pittie genes, but is it even possible to get black pups from a brindle/red breeding?

    • Gold Top Dog

clearly...but the hair problem was he wasnt able to wash them every single day but its not major. Dosnt look major besies some hair not growing but ive had dogs like that in the past and there hair grew in after washing weekly.  But will take him to a vet in the morning i set and appointment.

This guy is not a trained breeder. His dogs just had pups and pitbull pups are easily sold. So i purchased one, i realize people here are very huge dog lovers and know alot about dogs. But from the dogs ive had as long as the pup is happy its all that matters. I havent had one dog that wasnt happy. Even the vet said my dogs are verry happy.

People here go through so much for there dog so that THEY'RE happy. but forget that its your animal who has to be happy. And mostlikely he or she will be happy with a bowl of food, water and someone to play with period.

Not saying you people are ignorant or anything all of the advice is extremely helpful i really appreciate and will read all of it and learn more about dogs from you guys. But its your dog that has to be happy not you

I'm not a pit person, but why would a dog have to be washed daily to prevent hair loss?  IMO, that would CAUSE hair loss.  I wash my dogs every few months and even then it's not totally necessary (I groom Kenya before big shows and when Coke goes to the groom for a trim, they automatically bathe him).

Your dog can't be happy if it attacks someone else and gets put to sleep. ABPT's are being banned all across the nation and it's up to their owners to make sure we set the very best example for the breed. IMO you have a very dangerous attitude about the situation and I hope I don't see your pup on the news...

No, "not washing" will not cause hair loss.  There is something else going on there.

No, the dog must also be trained.  And that is not just for the human's happiness, or the dog's happiness.... it is for the SAFETY of the dog, and you and everyone in your neighbourhood.  It's not just about making the dog "happy" - it's about fulfilling your responsibility.

It's one thing raising a happy dog, it's another ensuring that he is not only happy, but an ambassador for his breed.  A Pit has to be whiter than white.  A Pit is held to a higher standard than any other breed.  In part this is due to his power and strength, and in part it is due to his innate terrier nature; his tenacity, his "don't let go!" his spunk.  Hardly anyone cares if a chihuahua treis to chew a kids face off, right?

GA hustle do you still have your other dog, the GSD/chow mix?
    • Gold Top Dog

Don't you have a GSD mix that you let run loose on your property? Is that going to be your set up for the pit too? I don't think you should get this dog...I don't agree with the way you keep/kept your other dog, and I think the breeder of this pit sounds very unreputable....you are just asking for a dog with health and temperament problems, and I don't think you have the experience to handle it properly.

    • Gold Top Dog

No, i dont have the gsd any more. I gave her to my aunt & cousin because my younger cousin fell in love with her when they came to visit us.

We moved on 3/4 acres. This dog wont be running wild will be kept tied on a pretty long cord with nothing but grass. I am building a dog house for him heres a look

I have been looking into your past posts and reading through this thread, and I have to agree with 2shelties.

The APBT needs an owner that is thoroughly educated in this breed (they're really not for the average dog owner). Not only because they're a very powerful breed, but because today APBT's and their owners are scrutanized under a microscope unlike most other breeds (because of the bad media). Is that fair? No. Is that reality? Defiantly. The "breeder" you bought your dog from does not sound very good, unfortunatley. Please do your homework (I hope you already have) on this breed and fulfill their needs. Please, talk to the people on this forum that are experienced in this breed like AuroraLove and Spicy_Bulldog.
