Reading this thread makes me rethink the idea of getting a male in the future. I'd forgotten how bad the marking can be - ugh!

LOL! Luckily, neither of mine have ever peed in the house. Kaiser marks EVERYTHING on walks though. Wyatt doesn't even hike his leg...he still squats and is almost 3!

don't think you're safe sticking to females- many a strong-willed queen bitch, neutered or not,  will pee-mark everything in sight.

Max doesn't need to lift his leg on anything - he just lifts it wherever he is.  He peed on me fairly recently because of his habit of changing legs mid pee.  Now I just let  the leash out to the full 6 ft.  and back off when he stops to pee.

Perhaps I've just been lucky but both of my dogs are trained to pee only in the bushes area on the bark and not on the grass. Neither of them has ever peed while on a walk (we have them go before we leave). We had a male prior to adopting Sassy and I remember him peeing on everything. We had chairs blocking the AC unit so he didn't pee on it and rust it out.

I think that there are a lot of positive attributes of the males vs. the females, but I seriously had forgotten how bad the marking can be. On the other hand, we never had fights with a male and female, so there's a huge plus.

Yeah, Sally marks as much or more than Jack and Jack was fixed at a year old.  When we go on certain trails she has actually perfected the art of aiming and peeing on other dogs poop piles without stopping (if I stopped for every "mark" we'd never make it through the walk).

Charlie has pee'd on a kids leg before. Me and the kid were just talking and standing beside my pasture fence when all of the sudden I look down to see Charlie going on the kids leg. I was so embarrassed! Luckily the kid just laughed and used our water hose to wash off his leg.

    Gah these boys!

Emma is a big marker. She doesn't mark inappropriately often. Recently, she decided that trashcans at work were ok to mark, and we had to have a talk about it. Now, she has to heel past the trashcans. Can't mark if you're heeling!

My friend's Pit Bull was neutered at 4 weeks (I know, right? Utterly ridiculous!), and is a crazy marker. He's marked Emma, several times. I always laugh, hysterically, when he does it, and I guess that's reinforcing. It's just *so* funny! They have a peculiar relationship... they really adore each other.

I never had a problem with male dogs. Teddi marks outside only, never had a problem in a house, same with Moe. I tend to prefer males over females anyway, but Maggie does do this. She marks everything and anything when we go somewhere or on walks. Anything she smells she has to mark over it with her scent.

two houses down from where we are is a wee little white dog, not sure of the breed but something in the 6-8 lb range probably, behind a fence made of wooden slats with maybe 4-6" between.  I swear Sammy isn't a hound since every time we walk past and the dog is out, he totally ignores the dog even if they are 2 inches apart, he'll sniff the fence and must smell *something* so he lifts his leg to mark and gets the other dog on the head!   Not sure why he doesn't ever acknowledge the other dog, but that's for another discussion I suppose.......

Overall, though, Sammy marks but not obsessively or even all that much, and mostly he squats when he pees because he just has to pee!
