What's in a Name??

    This is a fun thread.

Grady was named Buddy by his rescue group I guess.  At least that's what he was posted as.  Since he came from Arkansas we had a list of southern sounding names for him.  We picked Grady once we met him & it fits him well.  Actually I mostly call him Graygray now.  At least that's what it sounds like.

Aspen was named ESPN.  GAK!  That's no name for a Papillon IMHO.  Since he was 5 when I got him & I had been calling him Aspen anyways it stuck.  He was a pet sitting job that I misunderstood his name from the get go.  ~shrugs~  He also answers to Peanut.

Maghee was named Maggee when I got her.  I was going to call her Maghee (pronounced Ma-gee).  Once she was here for a while I decided that she really WAS a Maghee (pronounced Maggie).  So I call her either Mags, Maghee or Margaret when I'm serious.

Most of my dogs' names are shortened versions of the original names I gave them.

Porche is actually 'Lady Porche', I wanted some regal, beautiful and femine for her. Although, she's a pretty masculine, hefty Rottie. hehe

Wylie is actually 'Wylberton Paxton.' Don't ask, it just popped into my head one day.

My roomate and I named Roxy after 'Roxanne'- the song.

Charlie is technically my roomate's dog, but we both love him the same. His full name is 'Charlton', but that just sounds too serious for a bouncy Pom pup.

Cheyanne just popped into my head one day when I was trying to figure a name out for her. It fits her I think.

I wanted a flower name for Lillie and thought about what I was gonna put as her registered name.I knew I would use her dad's name and the word fire on her papers. And I came up with Montgomery's Fire Lillie.

Kujo.....oh gosh. I did not name her. If I had named her she would have been Sage. But JJ wanted to name a dog for once and unfortunately he thought Kujo would be a funny name for such a little dog. I protested for a while but eventually she got used to being called Kujo.

I spell all the names a different way then they normally would be spelled if I can.

Oh I had forgotten about nicknames!! Gosh!

Rory is typically Ro-Ro or pup-pup! DH just calls her "baby girl"

Primo is Preem-Deezy because I'm weird, LOL. DH calls him Bud a lot or "big boy"

Cherokee was originally Dizzy...because when tied to the tree she grew up tied to, her former owners noticed she ran herself in circles around it, and thought she'd get dizzy. Angry Angry Angry

After my sister rescued her, she named her Shenandoah, but since that's so long, she shortened it to Doah like a stupidhead... I hated that, so I called the dog DoDo Bird, which caused my sister to promptly change it, lol... we're part Cherokee Indian, and my sister's always been particularly intrigued by that, so Cherokee she became. I probably wouldn't have chosen that name, but it fit, and everybody was used to it by the time my sister gave her to me, so...

We have a Disney theme for the cat names. First we got Lucifer, named after the cat in Cinderella (and partially because my middle-aged mother still enjoys "rebelling" against her mother, lol). Then one of my sisters found a cat, and named him Rajah after the tiger in Aladdin. After that we had to stick with the Disney theme, so Tiger-Lily's after the princess in Peter Pan, and Kovu (mine and the only one I named) is after a lion in the Lion King 2.

Taz is my cousin's/aunt's, don't know why they named her Taz... And Jaz was named by his original owner (my sister's ex), also don't know why. Totally a coincidence that we have Jaz and Taz. Big Smile

I kind of wanted a german name for Kaiser, so i just looked a german dog names...real creative, i know lol. The other names i was thinking about for him were Maverick and Ace. I'm glad i named him Kaiser though. Nicknames: Kai-Kai, Kais, and big brother

I started off wanting to name Wyatt a swahili name. Well, i couldn't find anything suitable, or easy to say. I thought Wyatt was a great name, and i feel it suits him. Nicknames: Wy-wy, little bear, little brother, and for whatever reason...Deeds.

I'm already trying to think of a name for my dober-girl, even though it will be a long time!!

Shadow was named on his purchase papers. And so that has been his name all of his life but my personal name for him is Pretty Boy.

Jade was originally named by a friend's daughter as Chi (pronounced like key). But we renamed her partly due to this forum. We had toyed with the name Jade because her eyes are green in the shade and hue of the gem. That name took hold here so, she is Jade. AKA stinkerbutt, Little Lady, instigator, Little One (though she is full grown).

First I have to say I LOVE the names Cruiser and Pirate! Big Smile

Murphy is named Murphy because I LOVED the character Donkey in Shrek but I didn't want to name my dog Donkey. LOL So he's Murphy as in Eddie Murphy. He gets called a lot of variations of Murphy. Murf, Murfarelli, Murfachu. Plus he's called Little Boy quite a bit. At the rescue where we adopted him they had named him Red, but I didn't like it. And he didn't respond to Red anyway.

Ari's full name is Ariel (her registered name is Stratford's Mountain Winds) - the breeder gave us a list of names to pick from (including call names) from a Shakesperain theme.  Well to be honest, we weren't crazy about many of them - but we like the "nickname" Ari for her so that's why we picked this one - plus I do like her registered name, fits in well with us living near the white mountains, we both like to hike and my SO is an avid skier!  I wasn't sure how the breeder would feel about us changing her call name, but I like the sound of Ari, it's short sweet and easy to say in a happy tone :)

Is that...normal? For breeders to give buyers a list of names to pick from? I've never heard of that before. Kind of creeps me out.

I have heard breeders requiring things like that except I didnt know they could require call names too. I thought that was left up to the buyer.

Jazzy - our daughter named her Jazira after a horse's name in the movie Hidalgo, and we all call her Jazzy.

Lacie - "Princess Lacie Lu" - I like the name Lacie because it sounds feminine and I also like the name Lucie.  We combined them and everyone calls her Lacie or Lacie Lu.

Keisha - "Woodland's Sunny Caniche" - Woodland is our kennel/stable name. Sunny because of her light color and sunny personality.  Caniche means Poodle.  We call her Keisha as a nickname for Caniche.

Rex - "Woodland's Sir Rex" - Rex was named after the dinosaur on the movie "Night in a Museum".  The dinosaur leaped and pounced like a big, happy dog and that's what Rex was like.  The Sir is in there because he has such a regal look about him.

Zoe - "Woodland's Splash of Color" - she is a parti poodle and very colorful, hence the name.  But Zoe means life and this little gal is just full of it!

I was a little upset that the call name was already chosen - I don't mind her picking out the registered name.  There is nothing in our contract stating that we need to keep her call name, but we are quite fond of the name "Ari" (and the puppy!) so it all worked out :)

When we first picked Ripley out at the breeder's, we had named him McCallan. After he was home it didn't fit, so we searched dog name lists online and we both liked Ripley....his registered name is Sunburst Believe It Or Not. My daughter suggested Frosty's name, and he looked like a frosted version of Ripley, so that was it....his breeder had been calling him Jimminy and his littermate/sister Cricket. I thought that was really cute, but only as a pair. Jimminy doesn't make sense without Cricket. His registered name is Selkirk's Winter Wonderland. Shiner is named after the slang term for a black eye, because he has a black spot over one eye. His name at the shelter had been Grady, and at the rescue he was Enzo. I joke that his registered name is Cherokee's Black n Blue...course there's no way he could be registered, but Cherokee is the county shelter he was in, and black n blue because he's a blue merle and it ties in with the black eye theme.

Isabelle (Belle) was given to me by my daughter and suggested the name.  I liked it so I kept it.

Gracie was named after the grace we receive as the free gift we receive from our Lord.

Treasure was given her name, because I had lost Sophie shortly prior to getting Treasure.  Sophie was such a treasure to me that  I honored her by giving Treasure her name.  Treasure is truly a treasure in her own right.

I just loved the name Olivia so my baby Westie was named Olivia.
