he was supposed to be staying next to me Devil

was going to write a post in general chat but heck here is just as good

The cabin was great - small, very small - but had everything you'd need and a hot tub too!  We all had a great time but I believe Bugsy had hte best time.  He is a trail dog in a big way and there were glorious smells for his overactive nose everywhere.  He is a slave to his nose.

He did fairly well about staying in contact with only a few scary moments.  One such moment was when a huge deer visited the cabin grounds while he was out exploring, he took off and was out of sight instantly.  Fortunately I had bought an emergency whistle from REI before we left and despite no training with it - it worked.  He tested it again going after a rabbit.  So if your dog zones out and will never have 100% recall get a whistle Geeked

Overall though I was impressed that we could walk to the river with him dragging that red line and he still listened to commands - impressive stuff for him.  Really!

We also discovered that he can indeed swim.  He loves water but has only swam once.  We made this discovery because he decided to chase a couple of canoes.  Tongue Tied  Fortunately the man & sons in them thought it was funny.  I did not nor did DH.  They chatted to us as they went by and talked to him and he went after them full tilt.  He became 100% deaf and just went and went.  The guys in the canoes were trying to tell him to stay as a rapid approached and then the depth of the river increased significantly.  He went over the rapid with them and now was a good distance off.  When I finally got to him he was swimming, up stream, into a strong current.  I was thrilled.  I can be less worried near water now.  This became a new game for him and the next canoe that came by I held him until they were about 25 yrds past us but when I let go he flew off galloping through the water, over the rapid, etc etc.

Never saw that coming. Very glad that all six people involved were OK with a giant goofy dog Stick out tongue And even more glad that he swam!

On our last morning there we walked down to the river and a young collarless yellow lab joined us and Bugsy's world was complete.  She was a real sweetie but followed us back to the cabin and hung out there, her sitting outside the screen door, him inside.  LOVE!  DH had to walk here home which was a trailer with about 5 other collarless dogs.

Only bad part was coming home and realizing he got fleas - from the lab,  the cabin, the earth - who knows. But that has had me in a panic making sure every last remnant of them is gone.

Its a real pretty part of the world if you like rural and rustic.  Cool temps and just chillin'

Your account of your scares with Bugsy reminds me so much of the way I found out wether Rory is relaible or not, LOL! As ashamed as I am to say it having her off leash has taught me her ability to listen and thankfully we've lucked out however I am more cautious these days since we have Primo and I know for a fact he is not reliable.

Rory can be off leash and not run after game or other dogs.....unless of course its a horse. The first time she saw a horse I stupidly had her off leash and she literaly wove in and out of his legs like "Hi, Hi, Hi, oh your a big one huh" as my heart just pounded in my chest as I pictured the horse bucking the rider off and me being at fault. Thankfully the rider was laughing her butt off because her horse loved dogs.

Needless to say Rory was leashed immediately........30 minutes later here comes another horse so I pull to the side of the trail to let them pass. As they go by the rider says "thank you for keeping your dog close, my horse is skittish around dogs".....all I could do was nod with a lump in my throat.!!! LESSON LEARNED!

I know that dogs are nose, ears then eyes but Bugsy is NOSE, ears, eyes.  I never thought he would be able to hear me while on a gravel road in the woods heading to a river so that was wonderful.  Even around the cabin, by the second day he could go out without the red line, under a watchful eye, with intermittent verbal contact, be OK.

The deer and rabbit chases didn't surprise me, scare me, yes, surprise no.  But the canoes???? Bizarre.

He will never be 100%. I know that and accept it.  I work on it all the time but he is who he is.

In 'nature' he is a dog on crack.  It is easy to see how he wound up as a stray

I'm vacationing vicariously through you!  That is my kind of relax.  You had me at that first picture...love the cabin!

I'm sure these pics don't give the live view its proper justice.  But, I was just relaxing in my chair and felt so serene at the end of your pics..  Embarrassed

It sounds like you all had a great time!  Bugsy mostly!  He got to chase canoes, master swimming AND get the girl.  I'm not telling Buddy about this at all.  Stick out tongue

Wow awesome place to take a vacation. Is it a State Park? Looks like you all had a great time, especially Bugsy.

    Is it a State Park?

The cabin was in a teeny town about 12 miles from the New River State Park

The New River was just a short walk from the cabin so we went to it everyday.

A VERY pretty part of NC way up in the NW corner very close to both the TN & VA borders.  Very natural, typically nice and cool, it does shower on and off (Blue Ridge mountains typical climate) and very relaxed.
