You know your a BYB breeder when.......

    • Gold Top Dog

lol Ron, move off that box so i can stand on it now!

yes i agree.... BYBs (at least the one related to me) doesnt care about the well being and health of the litter and is down right pissy when a litter is "a waste of time"

the two pups i took in likely died of hook worms. i recognise the signs and symptoms NOW! -... after the fact I talked to a vet who was more than informative! - i wish i had known then what i know now! those pups might have lived Sad

    *********

BYB Cuz believed you cant worm a bitch while she's pregnant. Has to be before breeding or after weaning.

Vet said, after rolling his eyes and sighing, yes you can... only danger is it wont work.... and you have to reworm with something more expensive that DOES work.

BYB Cuz believed you cant worm pups until they are weaned - hence why she lost an entire litter of 10 at the age of two weeks....

Vet said .... again after sighing and looking morbid .... if you DONT worm them at two weeks.... they'll be so infested with worms and die slow painful deaths....

i've passed on that info to her and boy did she look shame-faced.... but perked right up when she informed me that her other shepherd his pregnant now.

which brings us to another sign that you are a BYB

Breeding a white shepherd from an unknown background to a "Mahogany and Black" shepherd would be worth it just to see what the pups look like.....

...when you ask a random dog owner if they want to breed.

No joke, i've been asked to breed both my boys. A VET even asked if i would breed Wyatt. I told her he's not breeding quality, sorry.

I was asked to breed Kaiser at a farmers market, the lady also had a black GSD

Yes, I was asked for breeding rights to Hektor, the party asking had one of those "rare" blue pits and did not seem to care that:

    1. Hektor was not a PB

    2. He only has one testicle

    3. He is not a good example of his breed having a pink nose and pink around his eyes (and the one testicle)

    4. I was not willing to breed even though I was offered the "pick of the litter".

Needless to say it was shortly after that conversation that Hektor went in and had his testciles removed.

I think I am aware that a white GSD is not standard and I didn't know that there was a "Mahogany and Black." I barely know that there are different breed lines and even a difference between european GSDs and american ones. But yeah, I've heard people around here talk about rednose Pits as if it were a prized effect in a dog. No thought to temperment of the dogs, just the colors and what the litter might look like. I suppose that I should like hanging around such rednecks because I feel so smart in comparison to them but it's a hollow victory, like entering a battle of wits with an unarmed man. Where is the sport in that?

The costs are staggering before even starting to breed, just testing for genetic faults and making sure your dog or bitch is a worthy representative of the breed.  Anymore, I tend to stay away from the topic, kind of like religion, with coworkers who have dogs that they are thinking of breeding, "for the miracle of birth" yada, yada, yada......"

I bought a cup of coffee for 2.50 this morning...that is the average now, yet people balk at the price of a decent puppy anymore...why is that?  Everyone I ask still thinks you should be able to get a good dog "with papers" for 300.00......gimme a break.....

I actually saw this where I stopped for gas on the way home.

    "Lab Puppies

    AKC

    $500"

    A) a true purebred Lab with health and lineage will cost more than that.

    B) A legit breeder does not stick a sign hand-written with a marks-a-lot on the shoulder of S.H. 289.

    C) No mention of the breed color. There are three colors and each breed differentiation should be monochromatic, though I've seen Yellows look a little light around the face.

    Argh!

3 people at the park have offered there "stud service" for Cheza. They seem shocked when they find out she is spayed. Yeah, I don't intend to work her with sheep any more then maybe just as a hobby, and she has a screwed up bite. Not to mention, raising a litter of puppies is about the last thing I want to do. I'd rather leave that to someone who knows what they are doing.

People are amazed that all of our highly trained purebred BCs are neutered, except the youngest, and he'll be done when he's mature, or earlier if there is a pressing need.  Our locally famous working Maremmas are also sterile, except again the young one for the same reason.

All right, I suspect no one has done this one, though I haven't read all four pages:  "We want our daughter to learn about the hardship of childbirth and babies so she'll abstain from sex when she's older."  They wanted to breed their year old rat terrier that they got from a breeder that they thought, "might be a puppymill, since she seemed to have a lot of litters and puppies and there were buildings with a lot of barking coming from them."

They and a couple relatives bought puppies from different litters, except one pair of littermates, and now they were just waiting on the papers (still!) to "see if they were related" before breeding.  That might be another one - You know you are a BYB if you think conscientious breeding is making sure the parents aren't related.

I asked whether everyone was healthy.  "Oh, yes, except our puppy's littermate has something wrong with his leg - he might need surgery later.  But we aren't breeding him.  Tippy is fine."  I explained about luxating patella and how it's strongly genetic, and that Tippy's puppies could have it even though she doesn't, just like many times people babies are like uncles or grandparents rather than parents.

How about temperament?  Well, one of the prospective sires was really shy but they were working on that and he's gotten a lot better.  And Tippy is great, of course -  "We hope the puppies will be like her!"  Wishful thinking breeding, that always works.

Oh, and did I know anything about skin, maybe something that could be fixed with diet?  Both Tippy and one of the prospective sires had this problem where they lost the hair on their chest.  Tippy's isn't too bad, it only happens around her heat cycles, but "the other dog gets sores and stuff."  I asked where Tippy lost the hair and sure enough, it looked like demodex.  So I explained how every puppy from Tippy would have this condition, although it would only be severe in every puppy if she were mated with the one with that also had demodex.

I think I might have gotten through to her, actually.  I don't think they were completely committed to this idea - there's a lot of BYB in our community and probably they were being egged on by them.

Notice how they never mention what "papers." Shadow has "papers." A purchase receipt from the pet store where he was bought. An instruction sheet for puppies, a record of his first vacc's. Since then, to his file, I have added a paper for his neuter op and a paper each time he gets his vacc updated (which is due next month). We have 3-year rabies protocol so it will be next year before I have to change his rabies tag on his collar. Are those papers? IMO, "papers" are proof of lineage and health certs and it doesn't seem so special any more to have AKC reg. If that's the paper involved, it has lost its importance.

     I think you know when

You advertise Rockwiler pups will be huge guaranteed, giant paws already

    With Pits

A white red nose is a "rare albino"

Or using the white as a selling point looks just like a Dogo Argentino but much cheaper. (I'd hope if anyone is interested in that breed it'd be for more then the coat color!)

When you breed dogs, for the sake of it.

    • Gold Top Dog

When the puppy you bought from them dies at 8 months, and you phone to tell them about it in case the disease was hereditary, and they offer you TWO puppies from their newest litter who are 4 weeks old...

That's what happened to my family, before I found this lovely site and realized just what BYBs were...

When you claim, your "Cockapoo" litter has AKC papers and has been registered.

Amen to that. BYB's make that claim and the uneducated who know nothing about the AKC other than the fact that it stands for American Kennel Club just assume that such a claim means something. And then they shell out good money for an unregisterable mutt. I don't say mutt as an insult. The way I learned, a mix of two purebreed is a mutt. A mix of more than two purebreeds is a mongrel. For example, I'm a mongrel with my varied ancestry, if one were to apply breeding definitions to a human.

What's also sad is that there are websites that will create "papers" for whatever dog you have, as if that helps anything.

Excatly. The purebreds now were bred for a purpose. Hunting, protecting, etc. And they were also bred by people who were committed to making a healthy dog that conforms to certain specifications.

The "designer" dogs are bred for nothing more than money, by people who have no idea of what the ideal "yokie or labradoodle" will look like. There is no consensus to these BYB who are "designing" these dogs.

If you also do research you will see that theses designer dogs are not being bred from high quality parents. They are not having the proper genetic tests done on them. Many of these dogs end up unhealthy, over bred, and in pounds because they are touted as something that they are not.

Agreed, too. Once, at the Dallas SPCA, I saw a Labradoodle who was way taller than standard for either and he was barky and a bit defensive and smelled to high heaven. How's that for a sweet disposition and hypoallergenic. More than likely, the hapless humans who bought him originally found that they now have a dog that sheds constantly (from the Lab) and has to be sheared and groomed (from the Poodle) and still needs training because dogs are not born being Lassie. And, because most mixed breeds are not created with gene charts and health histories in mind, there could be some genetic problems causing temperment problems, etc. Breeding is science and some of the most reponsible dog people I have known don't breed at all. A lady I know has a Yellow Lab with generations of show winners in each parent. The dog herself is exemplary. Perfect in conformation, sweet and softhearted and lets kids climb all over her. Is a CGC and a therapy dog. And is spayed, never having been bred. Sometimes, good breeding means not breeding, even if you own a champion worthy dog.
