Pitbull tried to eat Eko this morning

    Super Angry

At the dog park. Thankfully I've been prepared for the day an aggressive dog set its sights on Eko, but I'm still full of adrenaline and anger.

A man came in with 3 dogs - black pitbull, white boxer, and something small like a pom. I've never seen the guy or the dogs. The pitbull marches in like Clint Eastwood, tail stiff and high and full of tension. There were only 3 other dogs there, known to us. Various sniffies happen, and the pitbull fixates on Eko. Eko is being deferential, but the pit is giving me the creeps.

The boxer is annoying another dog  on the other side of the park, who grumbles, and the pit LAUNCHES himself at Eko. We weren't even near them. I body block the pit as their faces meet and grab its collar, yelling at the guy to get his dog. The guy says "Why, my dog isn't doing anything." He holds his pit for around 30 seconds, lets him go and the pit charges straight at Eko again. Insert a million swear words. Once again I get my body between the two dogs and grab at the pit.

The guy grabbed his dog more quickly this time, and I yelled that he needed to leave the park, NOW. He didn't answer, so I made a statement about getting his *f word* dog out there or I would pepper spray it. Yeah, not my best moment, but I was in full mama bear mode. He went and sat down on a bench, holding the collar of his dog but not leaving. I positioned myself on another bench, Eko by the collar and my finger on my pepper spray. Another woman called the cops, at which point he left.

At that point, we noticed Eko was drooling some blood. Eko has at least one tooth puncture in his mouth, possibly another smaller scratch. He's otherwise ok, a little nervous. He's never had to face a dog who was strictly out for a fight.

What has me scared is how fast it all happened, and that I didn't even know the pit had made biting contact. If I had not been right there ... shudder. That dog was out for blood.

If I ever see him again, I will try and find out information on where the dog lives so I can report it to AC.

And to fend of the pit bull haters - that stupid dog smiled at me as I was fending it off. He had zero human aggression. Even when he was trying to eat Eko, he was super friendly to me.

Stupid owners. And yes, the owner was a young male, tattoos, and the pit was wearing a harley davidson collar as well as a prong. Stupid stupid owners.

Eko could have fanged himself actually...dogs with lip do that often..sometime even when playing. I am sorry you had a bad experience tho...and I hope Eko recovers from it and does not become uber defensive.

ACK!  You are brave!! I would have freaked out!!

I hope Eko is okay and that this doesn't make him fearful.  How is he doing?  And how are you doing?

But good for your for standing up to this guy! Next time, if he is there, see if someone can get a licence plate number

I hope both you and Eko are okay!!

I am so sorry! Way to go, though! Best moment or not, it worked, you kicked butt, and you and your baby are safe. Great job!Cool

Poor Eko! I am sorry you had to deal with that and hope he is OK. I personally want to slap people like that owner into next week, because it just adds to the bad rep that all the pit owners (myself included) have to deal with.

Not that it helps, but your line about the pepper spray and being a mama bear made me lol.

Great job Momma bear!  Eko I am glad you are OK, you see some dogs are not friendly (understatement I know) but don't let that bother you in the future OK bud?

I am serioulsy impressed by the way you handled that.  We had a new dog park open but I haven't taken Bugs there - he still doesn't realize that not all dogs are nice Indifferent AND Bugs has yet to do 'deferential'.  Good boy Eko it usually works

You are officially my hero!  Way to go Mama Bear!  I'm positive Eko is just as proud of you!

I'm so sorry!  And glad Eko is mostly okay.  I wonder if he might have gotten a prong from the collar in his mouth that caused the puncture?  You ARE BRAVE!  I don't know that I could have body blocked and grabbed a dog attacking mine, much less a pit!  Go Mama Bear!!!

This is such a common problem with the owners of pit bulls.....they really just dont know better and won't understand until something tragic happens.

I know you were in mama bear mode but the ONLY way I've ever been able to convince pit bull owners to stop taking their dog to the dog park without pointing fingers is to tell them that "regardless of who's fault it is the pit bull will always get blamed".

In this case its evident who was at fault but GOOD LORD where was this guy's common sense? What was he trying to prove by staying at the park?

How is Eko doing? No worse for wear I hope? If he wasnt a stable dog this could have very well traumatized him because of some person's carelessness.

If the guy isnt a total a-hole I'd maybe try to talk to him next time and let him know your concerns and tell him that it is very common for pit bull owners to set up play dates for the safety of all the dogs at the park. Let him know that if he continues to bring his dog to the dog park you'll have no choice but to contact the local AC......or give him the opportunity to figure it out for himself.....ask him what YOU should do to keep your dog and the others safe from his under socialized dog? Hopefully he is smart enough to figure out that his dog is the common problem.

    Thanks for the support, guys.

If I ever see the guy again, will explain my position politely and calmly. Unfortunately, no matter how nicely you explain it, I have found that most owners who think their dog is "fine" will cling to that, period.

I suppose Eko could have bitten himself, but the puncture is on the gumline of his bottom teeth, right up against the teeth.

Eko has been unusually low key, but I don't think he's overly traumatized. Soon after the man and his dogs left, Eko's best buddies showed up and they all lounged around together, playing gentle chewy face and cuddling. My biggest problem was calming myself down so that I wouldn't transmit my stress to him.

bulldogs dont belong in dog parks.. :wno:

i'm sure some people have taken their bulldogs to the park since pups.... they've been lucky is all i'll say.  all it takes is that one incident and you've just become another statistic.

    just... dont.

i'm sorry that happened to you Dogma... you were much nicer than i would have been, and this coming from a bulldog owner!  i would have called the cops with the first incident. that guy sounds like he was hoping for a fight.

Yeah, what DumDog said. The Pit should NOT have been there. ANY dog with dog aggression has zero reasons to be at the dog park.

Honestly, I avoid our dog park in the summer and during peak times like after work, even though I miss out on seeing alot of the regulars and Woobie's bestest friends.  The nice weather just brings out the casual visitors who don't speak "dog" very well, don't have control of their dog and their dog isn't exercised enough to be cool there.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE our dog park in the dead of winter in god awful weather when it's only us hard core, dedicated, dog loving kooks in there who have control of our dogs and know how to behave.  And for Woobie's sake, there's almost never a pesky K-I-D at the park during those times, so he LOVES it!

There always seem to be more of these stories in the summertime.  Sad

Personally, I agree 100%. If I owned a bull dog of any sort, I wouldn't be taking it to the dog park. Too risky, and really ugly if something does happen.

But people bring 'em all the time. Pitbulls, American Bulldogs (at least 3 I know of), amstaffs and mixes of the above. I hear tales of an English bulldog who is the terror of the afternoon.

I stick to mornings, at or near when the park opens. I avoid the "cocktail hour" at all costs. Called that for a reason - people sometimes bring up booze and socialize after work while their dogs run amok. Mornings are good, and the regulars all feel strongly about badly behaved dogs or aggressive dogs, so we watch out for each other. The worst we have in the mornings is the occasional bully, who while inappropriate doesn't really want a fight.

So this morning was weird! I passed the guy on my way, and noticed him then because I'd never seen those dogs in my neighborhood. And then they show up at the park and all that drama ensues. I don't know if this guy lives near me or was visiting someone. (I live a mile from the dog park).
