Hurtful Comments....

We get tons of rude comments.  For the most part, I just ignore them & dismiss the person who made the comment as an idiot.

    Very much agreed!!

I wouldn't take those comments personally.  I once had a person refer to Zoe as a "sewer rat".  I've had people tell me my dogs are not real dogs and that they are useless.  Anyone who makes such ignorant comments is not even worth getting angry with.

I don't let comments get to me.....the ones I really laugh at are the ones who have no clue about my breeds, situation or my experience......and the ones who are sudden experts over night, who have read books and all of a sudden own a dog and now know it all, the "Instant dog expert"....ha......I hit the ignore button......

i've heard many times that GSDs are dangerous and can't be trusted.

Not as hurtful, but everyone says he looks too skinny...well, maybe he does compared to lots of GSDs around here, but he's at a perfect weight for his frame.

I have only gotten a few negative comments on wyatt. Some people are afraid of him because of size. The only breed specific comment i've ever gotten was when someone asked me what breed he was. They told me they heard RRs were supposed to be very aggressive. I think i proved them wrong by letting them meet wyatt, haha.

Now when i tell people i'm getting a dobe, i'm shocked! So many people are like, "oh my gosh! Aren't they vicious?!" Personally, i've never even heard of a dobe biting someone, and have never ever met one that wasn't anything but pleasant...

The only comments I have are these lately. " Why you want so many dogs?" "She has too many animals." And if I get another pet of any kind I get "Oh god that's all you need."

I dont starve, ignore, hurt, etc my animals. So I think if I want to get more then I am allowed.

Now when Lillie was skinny skinny I did get comments about that.  It just made me mad because it was people who didnt know me saying I was starving her and I needed to feed her more. But as you all know I was doing everything I could to get weight on her. At 19 months old she finally looks great. Her hipbones still stick out a little but Im working on that with exercise.

Oh and I wont get started on Cheyanne since she is a Dalmation Lab and Chow mix.

I've had people refer to Monroe as a dumb lab - yeah right.  I just take a look at his face and think of how much these people are missing in their lives due to their own ingnorance.  How could you call this dog dumb?

You know what gets me?  The people I've heard making comments about how "dumb" a lab or Golden is will turn around and say a breed like a GSD is "too smart for its own good" and only "wants to dominate you and outsmart you."  Too dumb...too smart...hoookaaaay........... *eye rolls*

It is so hard to be on the other end of these comments because 1) you know they are smart/good disposition/well trained or 2) you are ACTIVELY working on the training to correct behaviors.

I have a couple reactions to your post.  First, how sad for these people that they are missing out on the love of a wonderful animal.  And then quickly followed by, "Thank God my dog didn't end up with one of these narrow-minded jerks!"  It really is better for them to pay $2,500 for their mixed breed puggledoodle (no offense) and marvel at how well they've chosen a dog that will have the perfect percentage of breed characteristics that suit them, well...  just as long as they don't go to a dog park because little sweet "Bootsy" doesn't play well with other dogs, or take them out in public places because other dogs make little "Bootsy" too hyper.  Sigh...

Granted, all these thoughts come after the mean ones.  Like to the old lady's comment "some dogs just don't deserve to be rescued," my initial thought is, "Yes, I guess when a living being cannot take care of itself, it should just be put to sleep.  By the way, how old ARE you?"  BTW - I would never actually say that.  Angel

when I first got Casey - many, many people told me that I was just wasting my time, he wasn't worth it - just put him down before he hurts someone. Well - I stuck with him, and he's turned out to be the best pup for me. Now... I just get comments like - little dogs bark all the time. He's aggressive. Things like that - which are not true. I still get the occasional person that will say he should have been put down (just because of how he acted at the shelter, and I agree. He was nasty, mean, and a very bad boy). But he's not like that now, we worked through his issues. I'll admit it - those things got to me, and I did start to question what I was doing, if things would ever change.....

Plus.... who could say no to this face!

I got the same type of stuff with Heidi from the other volunteers, and a small handfull of staff members that didn't know her. The e-vets questioned her life too.....and I did put her down, but I couldn't do it without giving her a fair chance first. But, that was a totally different thing...I spent many days hysterical, not knowing what to do with her.

well, i dont get many "bad" comments, because as a foreigner i am treated with more respect than average. plus, with all the lack of training of ANY dog here, most people just comment on how my dogs are so smart. i think they are average, i guess, but these people seriously often dont even know that you CAN train dogs. lol...

i HAVE had one guy tell me, i should keep moca and give jason away, cause he's a mutt. i just looked at him. didn't say a word. eventually he got the message and scurried.. lol... i'm a very polite person, but when people are rude to me (and giving nasty comments about me, my dogs or anything else that is related to me within earshot or directly to my face is pretty darn rude!!) i can get pretty nasty. i got quite the temper, lol.

most of these people really have NO idea what they are talking about.

totally unrelated: it totally cracks me up when i give comments to my dogs and chinese people go: "your dogs speak ENGLISH?" in total disbelieve! ROFLMAO!!!

This seems off base,  but I sometimes get offended when I read a comment that "if you a dog who will X, go get a Golden" as if Goldens are less of a dog.  Or the comment that "I would never get a Golden because they are yuppie dogs."  Silly I know.

A funny experience happened at the last agility trial I was at.  A woman who I know very slightly, who is the partner of someone I know much better, commented on how pretty Selli was and then said that Goldens were dumb, just smart enough to know how to wag their tails.  The funny part is that her partner has three Goldens.  Their older female has a MACH and titles in obedience, tracking and field work.  They also are puppy raisers for Paws for a Cause and always raise Goldens.  I hope she was being factitious.

Lots of people tend to think that Irish Setters are dumb, highstrung, and hyperactive. I've had 6 purebreds and one half Irish/half flat coated retriever, and none of them have been dumb, highstrung, or hyperactive. My dogs are intelligent and exhibit very good behavior. If an Irish Setter doesn't get exercise, sure he most likely will act up - but that's not being hyper, it's called having energy!! Right now Cadie and Riley are sleeping on the couch...my oh so very hyper dogs. : P The breed got this rep due to the unethical breeding after the movie Big Red was released. But none of my dogs have been the way many would perceive. They are very intelligent and willing to learn. Stubborn, yes, but not dumb. I've heard that they're flighty, feather-brained, useless.....however I doubt any of these people who believe those things have lived with one.

ISG, i think that's a good point. a lot of people seem to just "know" stuff from hearsay... can't tell you how much dog training advice my dad gives me and he has never ONCE in his life had a dog! he will also give me weird facts about dogs.. i just nod along... lol

When people ask me what type of dog Ginny is, they just flat out don't believe me. I say Mountain Cur and they laugh..."What? That's not a real breed" or "Ha ha, is that the "breed" that Mountain Hillbillies own?"  I admit she has rather a "dumb" looking face on occasion, but when people laugh and proceed to ask me if she's a dumb hillbilly dog....I get rather upset. Try to hide a treat anywhere in my apartment, including under couches, behind bookshelves, inside socks, inside the dishwashed (yes, inside the dishwasher...evidently she can track to and inside the dishwater). See how long it takes her to find it, and then tell me how dumb she is. >:(
