    Hands up who has...

...ever had a dog that was reactive or aggressive?  Ever had a dog that attacked another dog unexpectedly?  Did it turn into a problem you had to address?  Have you ever had a dog that you knew had issues but taht slipped beyond your control?

I was just reading the other thread about the dog who got away from his owner while on a retractable lead and I was trying to be charitable because (confession time) I know what it's like to be that person who finds that their dog is not under their control.  It is scary, embarrassing and very, very unpleasant.

How many of you guys have been in that boat?

Kaiser can be reactive, when on leash. He normally doesn't do anything but stare, unless another dog barks at him. He doesn't do anything crazy, but he does this ground pounce thing and whines. When he's off leash, he totally ignores other dogs...weird, i know. I let him meet my neighbors pit the other day, and i honestly didn't like the way Kaiser was acting. He had his hackles up and kept laying his head on the other dogs back. The pit was tucking her tail and she rolled over on her back. He didn't snap or growl or anything, but i put him up and just let Wyatt play with her. I used to take Kaiser to the dog park a lot, but one time there was an unaltered boxer who kept mounting him. Kaiser turned around and snapped, and they ended up getting in a fight. We haven't been  back since, i am terrified.

I know kaiser doesn't really have a lot of fans on here, so i hope this doesn't make everyone dislike him even more!

OOOoooooh Mee!!! O meeee!!! I have!  [bouncing up and down in her seat with her hand up]

Crusher's issues seemed to have come out of nowhere, though I'm not insane enough to even try a retractable leash on him.  I know now that likely I caused his reactions, but at the time, I didn't so I just made them worse for a long time.  I was at the point of really wondering if I would ever be able to walk him in public again.  He was just always on guard, and he seemed to be enjoying his walks less and less.  Worse, he was beginning to rub off on Onyx if she was with us.  But after doing some research, mostly on here, along with Click to Calm, we've come a long way.  I'm still on the lookout for other dogs cause he does have a certain perimeter that can't be crossed by some dogs, but he's much more relaxed now and confident that I will handle it.  I feel better now too knowing that I can.  The only time I tense up is when I see an off leash dog that doesn't seem to be listening...that only usually spells trouble.  In those cases we usually just head the other way.  Crusher accepts it as my way of 'handling' the situation.

Kaiser doesn't have many fans on here? what?! I for one, adore Kaiser! Big Smile

Teddi can be reactive on leash, we keep him on a short lead for walks, and we are working on the barking/kinda lunging at other dogs, and he's gotten sooooo much better, but he's not perfect so we keep working with him on our walks. He was always a shy pup and I don't think free puppy playtimes in obedience class did justice for him.

aww thanks! I've kinda gotten that impression, but i know some people like him! He's BYB and not appropriate size for a GSD, but he's amazing to me!

I think he's a handsome devil myself, and I am definitely a HUGE fan!  I often look at your siggy in envy!

My terrier used to be dreadful with other dogs, for a loooong time.  I suspect now that it might have been linked to be attacked badly as a puppy.  It happened suddenly. He had always played beautifully with other dogs.  He was sometimes wary around larger dogs after the attack but I would call him away and reward him for coming and then put his lead on and walk him away.  Even now I don't know if that was the right thing to do...

Then one day we were on our usual walk and there was a chap with a Westie coming the other way.  I saw no warning signals from my dog at all - he just tore over to this other dog and started fighting with him.  I was so shocked!!  I did apologise, profusely and tahnkfully most of it was snarling, snapping and posturing - no punctures.  We had a long gap with no aggression.  Then he had an altercation with my brother's dog - at the time we thought it was territorial.  His dog needed a couple of stitches in his ear.  Another long gap with no problems and then he attacked a cross breed for absolutely NO REASON at all that I could tell.  This time I recognised his body language and knew what was going to happen
, but I failed to get him under control in time - as I said, previously I had always been able to recall him and I had no reason to believe this time would be different.  It was utterly horrible to call him and have no response at all.

After that he was kept on a lead, always, because I couldn't trust him any more.  It wasn;t a great solution, because he was actually more reactive on lead, but at least he restrained.  It took YEARS of work before I trusted him again and even now I don't trust him 100%.

Pfft.... Every dog I've had has been BYB and not correct, before Ena. I <3 those wonderful dogs that would break a conformation ring and render a judge unable to complete the class. Emma is top dog among them, LOL.

Teenie was the worst. She started attacking EMMA when I didn't expect it. After I realized what her nature was, though, I kept her separated from most dogs. Emma can be reactive, and yesterday, nipped a friend in the face. She was just having an off day, and it almost started a dog fight. *shrugs* The owner of the other dog knows Emma well, and knows how she is. Em was put up, and everything was fine.

I am also in love with Kaiser. And German Shepard's are the only dogs I am careful around because they seem to want to eat me.

Cheyanne is reactive to dogs only when they pose a threat to her or any of us. She doesnt like the neighbors dog. She absolutely hates her. But I cant blame her. The dog will stand in the middle of the road and bark down here at our house. Then when we go walking past the dog's house she will go after Lillie and Cheyanne wont have any of that. But out in public Cheyanne never pays attention to other dogs. She loves going places and other dogs just dont exist in her mind.

ME!! jason has always been a nervous dog, but the lack of socialization during the "china dog culling" weeks/months combined with one overly excited bigger dog and my ignorace towards the situation has turned him into a VERY reactive dog. i accepted the fact, that he may never be able to play with strange dogs, but i'm hoping he will at least learn to ignore them in the future... we're working on it. i for one definately know how you can easily slip into a situation out of your control, especially when you are dealing with this issue when it just came up. you tend to underestimate your dog's reactiveness. oh and i still use a flexi on jason. he is small though. but he really enjoys the bit of freedom it gives him and i think he deserves it, reactive or not. the control is still there. i havent had a issue related to the flexi yet...

Apollo is reactive towards small dogs and puppies when on a leash...honestly, I've never let him off leash with a small dog or puppy because I don't know how he'd react. He's very big (110lbs) and could do some damage if he were to turn aggressive on a small dog or pup (though I'm not sure if he really would). Recently he's been doing excellent, I've been practicing "leave it" and he seems to be making strides. He has never attacked another dog, and is social with medium to large sized dogs.

the dog i grew up (my mom still has her), ginger is one of the most aggressive dogs that i've ever met. She thankfully has never bitten a person, but she's hardcore with other dogs. She will attack out of nowhere. She will walk past my mom's 15 year old beagle, then turn around and basically maul her. Blood has been drawn many times. She is not allowed around the beagle without her basket muzzle. Funny thing is the only dog she's friendly with is my mom's other JRT. I cannot bring my dogs over to her house because she attacks them. She once attacked my last female RR, and the RR got her back and caused ginger wounds that had to be dressed. She's a little easier to deal with though, because she's less than 10 lbs.The other JRT is the sweetest girl ever.

We did have an experience in our home but with a person.  There are very few people Willow can be around and this particular friend was one of them.  He stopped by and everything seemed fine at first.  But, all of a sudden Willow started acting really nasty growling and staring at him.  We had to remove her from the room.  We were shocked because she's always been fine with this person and we know nothing negative has happened.  This person doesn't come over unless we are here and she doesn't see him otherwise.

Now we put her in a room our company won't be in no matter who is coming over.  I can't take a chance.  I think it has to do with her getting older but who knows.

Hammer-Head is reactive to only dogs and mostly when we are on the leash. If a strange dog wanders onto our farm Ham will 'Escort' the dog off our property usually with out a fuss, which is fine with me because I cant have loose dogs chasing my live stock. My own dogs know not to chase them but strange ones think im setting out a free dinner for them.

When I walk Hammer he is always under my control on a strong lead with me using my voice and maybe a treat to distract him from a dangerous situation. He is never able to get at another dog unless the other dog is loose. I know I can never walk him on a retractable leash with him nor will I ever try. No its not fun when your dog is snareling at another dog as you walk by with your him on a perfect heel and someone walks by with their dog dragging them along and calls you a bad dog owners undertheir breath. *sigh* But its worth it to see the dog become less reactive in what would have been tough situations before.

    Never had that experience.........yet!

There is a beagle that Salem HATES, and the feeling is mutual. We see this dog all of the time on one of our regular walks. For about a year every time this dog saw Salem she would go crazy snarling, showing teeth, barking, lunging. After about a year of this several times a week, one day Salem snapped and started doing the same back at this dog. I can't blame him at all really. Enough was enough. We have tried doing everything to avoid this dog, but she must go several times a day and we never really miss her when we go to that park, and its the closest park to us. What really drives me crazy is the women has the dog on a long flexi and makes no attempt to keep her dog away.

We have worked with Salem lately on the look at us command and he is getting better with it. Other then that dog he has barked at a few other dogs on walks, but never really in a mean way. He tends to park if very small dogs pull at him.

ETA: I also really like Kaiser. I think he is beautiful! I do have a thing for large black dogs though, and Salem is 1/2 gsd too so that makes me like Kaiser even more. Stick out tongue
