anti-bark 'thingy' - updated - built run instead *pics*

My cousin got one b/c her neighbors complained about barking.  When she went outside to install it, she noticed the neighbors already had been using one (for her dogs), so apparently it didn't work. 

hmm..ya i've read some reviews that the dogs just get used to it after a couple weeks. 

My boss had one and said it didn't work. I've had great success with the citronella collar, so you might give that a try. I'd definitely recommend buying whatever you choose thru a place like PetCo. We had problems twice with the collar and they took it back, no questions asked, and gave us a brand new one.

Has anyone tried any of the anti-bark things?  not the collars - but the units that emit a high frequency sound.  

 

     I use the "PetSafe" brand comfort fit collar for two of mine. We live in a residential area, and I have one young bitch who constantly sounds off her mouth - even when she's squatting to pee   It's annoying and ridiculous, and really impedes doing anything else with the dog save for trying to shut it up! It also is a common courtesy, becuase I live in a residential area, and if MY neighbor let their dog carry on like that, I wouldn't be a happy camper. I could not open the door to let her out without hearing "ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROOOOO ROOOO ROO ROO ROO ..." Ugh. She gets the collar now when I let them out, and only has to wear it for a few minutes. It's not permanent, becuase the dog learns what barking gets them very quickly, plus they associate the collar with the shock so all I have to do it take it out and show it to them to kee 'em quiet! I'd say the worst barker probably wears it for a total of 10 min per day, down from 30 min per day when we first bought it a few months ago. Since they realize the collar + barking = shock, when the collar is out of the equation, they realize barking is acceptable. I use this bitch for hunting and it has not adversely affected her, at all.

     Your question was about those sonic hi frequency devices - THEY DO NOT WORK! I have tried them in the past, and it was a complete waste of money. Oh, I know they heard something, becuase when the device was on, and they barked, they'd run over to me all tail waggy OR I had a few who hid under the couch ... and continued to bark at the hi frequency sound I know they also sell citronella collars that spray the dog in the face with a mist of citronella while they bark - and I'd much rather have them get a glorified static shock than a nose/mouthful of chemicals. JMHO.

    

I have two up in the backyard - on on either side of the yard, one directed toward the Chow next door who goes off way too much.

The dogs seem to got use to them pretty quick.  The most effect the one has was when a contractor working in the backyard of the chow's owner complained that it was bothering his inner ear while he was running some heavy equipment.  Oops!

 

I just wanted to add that dogs need lots of walking and time playing with us. I am sure we all know it, but seems like some forget and the dogs stay in the yard alone.  Just wanted to make sure they get out to walk each day. Usually helps boredom, barking etc.

I have to agree- why are your dogs outside by themselves all day? how much exercise do they get? how much mental work do they get?  why are you building a dog run instead of training the dogs to behave themselves inside?

     It's not a serious electric shock - it's more of like a bad static shock, or if you stick a key in an outlet. That sort of shock. Very low grade. Some dogs are just "booger barkers". They seem to love the sound of their own voice. I have one young dog who I could run for 4-5 hrs, 3 days a week durring rabbit hunting season, and the next day, she'd be tired, yeah, but couldn't miss a chance for her ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROO ROOOOOOOO the minute she stepped out into the yard. Annoying barkers seem to run in her line ... her grandsire is a PITA bark at the wind type, her sire is a dork and will get up in the other dog's faces and ROOOO at them.

     The collars are very safe, effective & humane. There are situations when there are two choices - stop the barking or get rid of the dog. Some dogs are just that bad :(  There are certainly efforts one can take to reduce the barking, but some dogs need the collar. It's not fair to the neighbors to have a dog carrying on like a lunatic every time they're let out into the yard.

they're outside when I work. I think dogs should be outside it least part of the day - all the 'house' dogs I have ever met are worse behaved than mine & overweight.  They get a walk a day & if i dont have time for that they get to go on the treadmill.  they also go for bicycle runs some days of the week.  they bark because I have crazy neighbors that make tons of noise & are annoying.   I wanted a dog run so that the dogs could be closer to us when we're outside - since we're in the back yard all the time.  I also wanted a run becuase I have TONS of foxtail on my property & am YEARS away from eradicating them - also they can't have free run of the backyard becuase Bella thinks chickens are fun to try to kill or play with.

so the run keeps them cleaner & safe from stuff like foxtails & more away from my neighbors.+

so i'm not getting the anti-bark thing, becuase we actually built the run today. It turned out great.

it's 20 wide and 40 feet long, it has a little lean-to type shed thing for more shade.

It is a nice run, although don't they still hear neighbors and bark?

I do have to disagree with dogs being outside all day though.  I've yet to see any dog left in a yard/kennel by themselves do any sort of actual exercising.  Dogs, indoors or outside, are only ill behaved and overweight if they are underexercised, not trained, and overfed. recover),  I know my neighbors like to leave their dogs out for hours at a time, and I can rarely go into my own fenced yard with my dogs without them screeching at the fence at us

a dog who is properly exercised will happily sleep all day. Dogs, like most animals, are naturally active at dawn and dusk. If your dogs aren't passed out most of the day I would suggest you're not meeting their physical and mental needs. Running a dog on a treadmill or by a bike does exercise the body but not the mind.

my house dog is not fat, nor is he untrained. He is very happy inside. We go on walks and to the park, and play fetch in the backyard. It's much too hot IMO for a dog to stay outside, esp. right now. He sleeps most of the day while I'm at work, and we go out and do things after I get off of work.
