Dog Attack

Light colored eyes are very near those of wolves...IMO it is a primal fear that humans have to one extent or another. I refer to amber eyes or light silver eyes as "wolfy" and it is a fault in many standards for various breeds that call for a gentle expression. In Malamutes for example a dark eye is preferred over a lighter one.

Same with Shepherds. And we've got a light-eyed Shepherd who sometimes has a bit of that wolfy look. It's a little spooky. Especially when she's got "prey" in her mouth...

So once again let me ask HOW many of you tried the test ????  Here is the url again I would really be interested to find out how many of you actually id'ed the Pit ??

I got it on the second pick , most take many , many more tries

    http://www.secondchanceforpets.com/findthepitbull/index.htm

And yes my breed is one of the trick dogs represented in the test.  Let the rest of us know  How you did ???

I got it first go, but the breed is kind of uncommon over here due to BSL and every pittie I've seen looks like the one I picked. I guess from the pitties I've seen, it's either a nice purebred or it's a pig dog mixed with several wildly different breeds like wolfhounds, deerhounds, mastiffs and the likes so that it doesn't look much like a pittie anymore. On the other hand, staffordshire bull terriers are one of the most common breeds I see.

Plus I'm a zoologist and it's my job to know what an animal is even when it looks like something it's not for some reason. Wink

Anyway, I think it's beside the point. ACDs have a bad reputation over here, but it hasn't stopped the breed from enjoying probably too much popularity. They're still great dogs and they're still right near the top of the dog bite list and they're still a really common backyard pet. All it means is that you think twice before approaching a strange one and wait for the owner if trying to enter a backyard guarded by one (or two).

Got it on the first try.  Not one of the other pics looked anything like a pit to me.

Chico was not killed because I yanked him up by his leash and as you should remember I said my neighbor jumped in and helped us. Yes it could of been alot worse but it was not and thank God for that. Also I never said I had a problem with pit bulls some are very good dogs but some have owners that breed them to attack. Look I just wanted people to know about the incident to warn everybody to always be aware of your surroundings that is all. If people don't believe me that is fine also because we know the truth. Also if I have a problem with pit bulls then why am I paying out of my pocket to board these 3 pot bulls who were taken from their owner due to neglect? Because I feel that they also should have a second chance like people always do. Thank you for your time.

I am sorry for anybody's feelings I might have hurt. I was emotional that day trying to defend my daughter when it seemed some people did not believe us. But I had no right to attack anyone. So please accept my apologies.

Rosered I sent you a pm a few days ago.  Please believe that we all understand how scary this was for you and your daughter.  I think some are just trying to over-analyze the entire situation and tend to forget how it makes you feel.  I really don't believe anyone has any malicious intent. GO SPURS GO. Sorry I can't help myself!!

there was a study done on this. It was mainly focused on black dog syndrome...but it also did note something about eye color. Light colored eyes are very near those of wolves...IMO it is a primal fear that humans have to one extent or another. I refer to amber eyes or light silver eyes as "wolfy" and it is a fault in many standards for various breeds that call for a gentle expression. That's interesting---I don't think it's just with dogs though.  At the barn we have a paint mare with 2 blue eyes and her eyes get lots of negative responses.  When they first see her many people say that she looks crazy.  DH said that she looks like she could shoot lasers out of her eyes....

I also sent you a PM rosered.

While it might seem like your thread has gone far from topic, in many ways the link to ID pitties is quite on target for the simple fact that pitties are very often misidentified.  Or other breeds thought to be pitties.

I think the bottom line is that it doesn't really matter what breed of dog attack you and your daughter.  I'm not doubting that you've correctly identified the breed.  But, regardless, the attack happened, you and your daughter were injured and that should be the focus, IMHO.

It isn't uncommon here for threads to take on a life of their own and for the tangents to become the focus rather than the original topic.  I'm sorry if you felt under attack by any of us.  I sincerely doubt that that was anyones intention.

I am so sorry I did not write you sooner but you have no reason to apologize. You are a very sweet person for writing those kind words to a stranger. And I want to thank you and everybody in the forum who helped me through this ordeal. But I have to admit I am scared to walk Chico I hope that feeling goes away. And as I have written before. I am paying to board the 3 pitbills since their owner lost his rights due to neglect. I love dogs but I am angry for the way some animals are treated. My Chico first belonged to my sister but when I saw here mistreating him. Like leaving him in her car in this Texas heat all day as she worked or she would not feed him and he was losing weight. Which we all know chihuahua's can't afford to lose any weight at all. I took action and when she left him with me for a month and never returned I took him to have his shots, flea dipped because he was full of them and all the grooming he could handle. Then 5 months later she returned and demanded I give her Chico back and I said no she became upset and tried to hit me but she fell flat on her face and we have not spoken since then. To me dogs are like children they love you unconditionally no matter what and that is the best feeling in the world.

That was an interesting test....I got it right on the second pick...I had it narrowed to the lab/pit mix and the pit and I clicked on the other one first.

This is the other test again surprizing how many folks need a couple of chances . The first test they change up from time to time, this one has stayed the same dogs as far as I know. The answers are at the bottom of the page on this one I have watched folks repeatedly sneak peeks at answers!

    http://www.war-online.org/Which_dog.htm

Again My friends who own an Invisible Fence company struggled to pick it in under 5 , my drunk brother got it first choice after a bit of thinking...

(We did it at a party )  Try both tests folks and then pass them along on your dog lists, the more people realize how often Pits are mistaken for other breeds the more chance we have of people not knee jerking agreement to BSL.

I am sorry those things have happened to you, including violence from your own family. I think it's safe to say that you have assumed ownership of Chico. If your sister does not have purchase papers and you certainly have vet bills with records of your payment of them, you have enough to prove ownership, if it should come to that.

I, too, am leery of unleashed out-of-control dogs, which is why I don't hardly walk my dog in our little town anymore. I go to a bigger town where they have animal control and animals are generally kept on leash. It's not that my dog could get hurt in a fight, though he could. He could also do some damage, as well. And I do not want him in the habit of seeing every dog meeting as a confrontation and need to fight.

The only way we have some animal control here is that one of the city plumbers is handy with a catch pole if he isn't busy maintain the lines from the wells or maintaining the sewer lift station. And many people here think it's okay to let their untrained dogs run loose. So, there are more of them than there are of me. So, for me, I cut my losses and drive. Like the comedian, Ron White said, "you can't fix stupid."

It took me four tries to get the right dog.  I'm a terrier guy, so I guess that isn't too bad.

Stray dogs, especially in multiples, are taken rather seriously here, ever since a jogger was killed by a group of what was describes as pits & rotts.  I always have my dog on a harness, this makes for a quick pickup.  I also wear steel toed boots, size 13, almost always, I might throw on tennies to go out in the yard.  215 pounds of guy with some martial arts training behind sturdy boots has been all the deterrent I've needed so far.

I'll tuck a .38 snub into a waistband holster if we are going anywhere further than from the house to the car.  People are dog stupid in the city it seems, they like their tough guy dogs, there is a dogfighting bust every other week,  and they don't seem to know how doors, gates, & fences function.  It doesn't matter the breed or mix, I've seen packs of dogs wandering the city as long as I can remember.  I'm not going to be crippled or killed by some owner's ignorance, or some lowlife's stupidity, neither is my dog.

Just this morning I was up early, digging the garden, with Kaz lounging in the yard.  For a 1 year old terrier he is pretty laid back, enjoys the morning sunshine.  He suddenly goes off, reason being two large dogs come walking down the neighbor's driveway, interested in the garbage can.  From appearances, a golden mix & a bully mix, my 15 pounder would be no match, the boots would have been tough with two dogs.  We know all the neighbor's dogs, my back fence has a secondary street behind the house, it's a regular dog walking route.  Kaz loves every dog that comes by, you say a dogs name, he bolts to the back fence & waits.  I didn't know these dogs, he didn't know these dogs, scrappy little guy shagged them off.

The police treat an attacking dog the same as a person attacking them with a weapon, while I love dogs, when they are in that mode it is treated as a potentially deadly assault.
