what do you do to keep your dogs cool?

I'm a big fan of the Cool Bed III. But if it was 100 degrees out my guys would not be left outside, they'd be inside under the A/C. How old is Bella that she's not housebroken yet?

Bella is about 11 months, she's pretty much housebroken but I dont trust her like my other dogs, every once in awhile she'll have a random accident.

the girls did fin yesterday, there was a good breeze & they pretty much slept in the shade. All of them were drinking lots of water & had good appetites.  My house gets pretty warm during the day, so I feel like they'd be better off outside where they can lay in the dirt in the shade.  We'll see how it goes, might just bring Sheba in since she's older.

that thread was awesome, all kinds of good stuff.

i shaved akyra's belly last night & trimmed up her legs.

Another good one is to go to your local plce that sells granite and see if they have chunks that are too small to make anything out of. Sometimes you can pick up pieces that are maybe 1' long by 4" wide by 1" think. Chill them in the freezer and put them in your doggy's bed (wrap a towel or blanket around it). They keep their cool for a long time since they are good at storing heat.

really??? did not know that! i dunno if those would fit in my freezer tho!!

should just make a pillow case type thingy & put some of those lunch cooler thingy in it.  i bet my dogs wouldn't lay next to them tho!! such twerps.

try a cool bed III- it's a "normal" dog bed except you fill it with water and it stays cool all the time. My dogs love them. I have one in the car, three on the deck.

yeah, 11 months is usually too young to be completely trustworthy free in the house.

I usually take one container of organic yogurt and split it up into an ice cube tray, and freeze. Mmmm, frozen yogurts!

After I saw your post Mudpuppy, I checked the idog shop and the reviews weren't that great. You're really happy with it though? I was ready to buy one until I saw the negative comments, but maybe I should reconsider.

i brought my girls in today, it's supposed to be hotter & we dont have the breeze like we did yesterday.  My kitchen & dining room is linoleum, i used an ex pen to close off one side of it( using the dining room tables, i have 2, to secure it), then the other side has a home-made gate ( complete with plexi-glass window!! thanks to the previous owners),  made them some ice water, gave them a few toys & set up a fan for them.  Right now my comp says it's 95 out, in the house it says it's 82.  Might just get the girls on a schedule of staying in - providing i can come home during the day to let them out.  Happy I set it up - they dont have free run of the house & if they  have an accident it'll be easy to clean up.

Now if only my chickens had the same accomodations!! lol

We only have a couple of months of hot temps and my dogs are inside dogs.  They go in and out all day long and when its hot they can come in.  If its over 100 I don't think its a good idea to keep them outside for extended periods of time when your not home, finding a way to keep them in the air is probably your best bet.   Hopefully the blocking them in the kitchen works for you but a little pee on the floor is better than heat stroke.

How about a crate for the pup who has acidents?

they did great yesterday in the kitchen. right now my old dog is inside,  when it gets hotter I'm going to bring the other two in. I agree, I'd rather have pups with not enough exercise from being cooped up than heat stroke.  My kitchen is kinda big so it's not too bad for them and the floor is nice & cool.  gonna try out the A/C today & see if it works.

It's funny, I've always heard that double coats help dogs stay cool as well as warm, but I never really witnessed it before the past two days, when Cherokee, with quite the thick double coat (she hasn't blown it yet, which I just realized is actually really really strange..hmm...), seems pretty cool and comfortable 95% of the time, and Jaz, with his thin single pit bull coat is panting like crazy. Vady vady interesting...

When Cherokee does start showing signs of being hot, I've been giving her a frozen short rib, or some frozen raw medallions. Both seem helpful. She's an inside dog, but we don't have A/C. She hates water, and would most likely not touch any expensive cooling devices I bought, so...thank god for the double coat! lol
