...that's a Terrier for you! Tenacious and fearless!

Tenacious and fearless are good words to describe terriers. Not surprising that the article didn't point out that pit bulls are terriers to.

Any one suspect that maybe the pit bulls were after the terrier to begin with? Dog aggressions is a common pit bull trait, human aggression is not. Why is it assumed that the pits were going after the kids?

That was my first idea too.  Regardless, loose pitbulls attacked a dog with kids around.  Whether or not their intent was to go after the kids should make no difference.  I think impounding them was the best solution.

I completely agree that they should have been impounded. There is no reason that those dogs should have been loose to allow this terrible thing to happen. I feel terrible for the poor children who had to witness this and the poor dog who had to be put down.

I just hate that the pit bulls were automatically assumed to be after the children when if it had been a dog without so much stigma it would have probably been considered a dog fight. I feel that with the stubborness know to pit bulls that if they were really after the children a tiny terrier wouldn't have kept at least one of them from getting to the children.

    I agree, it's a terribly unfair assumption.

However, we had a smilar incident nearby where a pack of 4 roaming pit bulls did attack a boy.  Maybe when they are acting as a wild pack, they see the smaller kids as prey.  Is hunting different than human aggression?

Interesting question. My answer would be if they intended to eat the child, it would be hunting. Thats different. Wolves at least don't usually get into a frenzy when hunting, I don't think. They aren't calm but they are stealthy and methodic(sp?). One or two will hold the animal by the neck and suffocate it if possible shaking occasionally, but not really bite over and over again. The others will rip at flesh, but again, not biting and releasing over and over. However I haven't done any research on this so I may be way off, but I'm just trying to picture wolf hunts that I have seen on documentaries and such. Cats are even more so.

What a brave little guy, uve gotta give it to him. R.I.P. George

Poor George. A Tzu was just killed in her own back yard that way. Horrid.

What I think is almost more horrid is the fact that this likely wouldn't have happened if George's owner had actually been supervising his dog - he's calling for leash laws to be enforced now, but he didn't even know about the attack until the vet called him after someone else brought George in...

I feel sorry for George and the kids!  Little dog with a big heart! RIP

I could dig through archives and show you reports of labs, german shepherds, poodles....all manner of dogs attacking children or just people.  The dog that YOU are so hell bent on getting could be headlines tommorow.  Irresponsible owners or folks who have little to no experience who get a breed that requires a LOT of training and then don't do it, well, those are the ones who are responsible for the attacks, not the dogs.  There are very few breeds who are inherently dangerous to humans.  We have to look at the people who OWN and don't do the things they should....like secure them in the yard rather than let them roam at will.

However, this thread is not about what the pitties did....it is a salute to a courageous little guy who gave his life to save the children.

    Run free George.
