Rabies vaccines for humans anyone?

Glenda, the bottom line is you can't avoid all bites, especially from a rabid animal! Someone told me their friend was bitten by a rabid fox that came onto the walking track when she was out hiking. It ran straight at her. She tried to kick it and it dodged and bit her on the other leg. And that rabid bobcat I mentioned had all 4 feet on its victim when it bit him. Although, I think it's usually pretty obvious when an animal is rabid. I don't know so much about rabies, but I know a lot about bat lyssavirus, which is almost exactly the same to the point where all the rabies shots are applicable. With lyssavirus, many bats don't even go through an aggressive stage. They just get paralysis and eventually can't breathe anymore. And the rabid fox that came into our kitchen cabin was not biting. I heard from other people that lived up there that they usually show up and hang around a camp for a couple of days, then wander off to die without ever biting anyone or trying to bite anyone. I think when it comes down to it, it's usually pretty obvious when an animal has rabies. They act REALLY strange. The couple of rabid foxes I saw had a really odd look in their eye like they were seeing things that weren't there, or not seeing much at all. Given you didn't get a chance to see this dog that bit you, and that the dog actually bit you when your back was turned, I reckon the rabies shots were a pretty good idea. We're supposed to get them whenever we get bitten by a bat, but bat people say off the record to only bother if the bat is acting sick or weirdly. Pretty much any bat that is sick with lyssavirus but isn't aggressive still shows symptoms, usually varying degrees of paralysis.

And that's pretty much all I know about that.

Honestly, aside from the initial shots, it's not that big of a deal, other than that I have to be some place on specific days to get them done.

But, holy spit!  Those first ones right into the darned bite hurt like all sorts of heck!  I've given birth twice without the first trace of meds, I've had a lot of stuff happen and I've got a pretty high tolerance for pain, but the shots in the bite on the back of the knee, well, those dang near brought me to tears....and that isn't easy to do!

But, the knee is totally mobile now.  That's a very good thing.  There is still some soreness if I happen to bump right on an actual bite hole, but other than that, I'm functional again.  The bruising is still pretty impressive, but heck I still have bruises from the move to storage, so not such a big deal.

You guys sent out some pretty darned impressive "heal quick" vibes!

I measured last night.  It was really warm in the RV after walking dogs and I'd put on a pair of running shorts when I came in.  I kept looking at the bruise and wondering how big it was....really LOOKS massive.  So, I measured.  This bruise is above and below the knee, pretty much all on the inside of the leg, but some all the way under the back knee bend, so it pretty well goes from the bone all the way around to about that point on the back of the leg.  13.7 inches!  Top to bottom.  Dang, that's an impressive bruise!

Holy cow!! Just a thought, did you take some photographs of it? On the rare chance they find the lady?

But of course!  And, I also had the ER doc take photo's when I went in for the first of the rabies shots.  The bruising was very evident by then, and I just asked for unbiased, couldn't be disputed photos to be taken.  I have also taken daily shots of the progression.  I've been putting a piece of medical tape above the bruising, but so it'll show in the shot with the date and time photographed.

    Well, I figured you would!

Had the woman stopped and shared vaccine info, that's as far as it would have gone. However, since she made the choice to run as fast as she could and leave me to face not just medical treatment out of my pocket but the rabies series which really isn't so much fun, at least those first shots, yeah, if she's ever found, I might just consult an attorney. That is totally unlike me, but gosh darn it, there is such a thing as personal responsibility.
