I'll give MY experience from the other end. I have a friend who got disillusioned with breeding so she kept her dam's last litter. She just lost the dam and now has four 12 year old labs all in varying degrees of severe health difficulties. They were all wild at the same time, and got 'old' at the same time.
I like keeping several years between my dogs' ages -- I don't like more than one *real* geriatric dog at a time because they take more time, patience AND vet bills. Currently Luna is 4, Billy is 8-9 and Kee is ... well, Lord only knows how OLD she is but at least 12-14 and maybe as old as 16+. (frankly her teeth were in such bad shape it was virtually impossible to age her that way)
Actually I love senior dogs and it's hard for me not to want to take a bunch of them ... but they are more care, more money, more needs ... so be careful what you set up now that you may 'reap' in 12-15 years!
