maybe this will stop him

I just have a question, how often do YOU take them to a walk around the neighborhood?
    • Gold Top Dog
1 at the time & usually 1 per day - averaging 2 days a week (is all the MS allows)
hubby takes the big boy (120 lb golden mix) and the "houndini" girl several times a week

put they love to chase their toys when thrown and will play "keep-away" from each other in their attempt to return the toy to me - fun to watch

I think the digging and the "runing" is a sign of boredom, the backyard is nothing else that a big "kennel", if you take your dogs out for a walk more often you will see the digging will stop and they are not going to be so eager to go out either, a dog needs to go out to walk at least 30 minutes every day (considering their size) if you add play time to that you will have really good balanced dogs [;)]

I have a friend that has exactly the same problem, he complains his dog also digs, i told him that the backyard is not enough exercise but he thinks that complainig its more comfortable than taking his dog out

we trimmed the hair from his foot (wiggly little guy) to check the foot injury mentioned in the 1st post of this thread - seems he has a tear along the side of 1 pad - cleaned and doctored it, will check it again today may need vet care as the cut goes just under the pad and most the way across

I've got a suggestion that will help keep them from digging out. I don't know if it's feasible for you, but this is what I would do. Dig a trench around the entire perimeter of the fence. Get some large PVC pipe, and bury it directly under the fence. It is basically an underground fence that will not hurt them if they dig into it.

and when a small 14 lb dog can pull me off balance enough to cause me to fall and possible injury - the walking him is something I can only do on my "great" days - my MS is recently entered the "next" phase - secondary progressive and we are fighting to keep me out of a wheelchair

sorry - not meaning to be snappish - just a bad emotionally today - been up 5 hours & in tears 3 of those

Dont worry, i was just telling you what can be the cause of that behavior and how to fix it, it seems that you hubby will have to add that "homework" to his schedule [;)]

I agree with the pp...I think exercise does a world of good.  Sampson is a lab mix with endless energy.  Maybe a neighbor kid could walk the dog to help out?
They are a heck of a lot cheaper than a dog walker.

was thinking about hiring a dog walker - the neighbor kids & I do not speak the same language (I speak American English, they Cuban Spanish) also they are too young even for the smaller dog

Have you considered a treadmill?  They make doggie versions, but those are sometimes illegal to possess because they are used in conditioning fighting dogs.  Talk to your AC officials before you get one of these.

A good human treadmill with lots of cushioning would be good, too.  Your hubby might also like it.

lol - actually working on getting a treadmill now - have our eye on 1 that the ppl do not use, is large enough for hubby & furbabies (I work in a machine shop, boss can & will "add" safe sides for me), the hubby wants it out of their house, but wifey says she might use it - hubby there has quoted us a price so . . . . .

if that is a no go in about a week, then we are going to buy a new one

    thanks for the idea
