What would you do if you won the lottery (mrstjohnson)

The Powerball lottery here in WI is up to $153 million.  DH and I were joking around last night thinking about what we would do if we won!  I think after taxes it would be about 76.5 million...that's a lot of $$!!

Here's what we would do at first,

#1.  I would quit so I could stay home

#2.  Buy a house in both MI and Phoenix - we both agreed that we wouldn't go nuts on the homes, just regular sizes homes but they would have pools and we would pay cash for everything so we would never have to worry about making a house payment

#3  Set up a trust for Riley so that she would be set later in life

#4  Set up college fund trusts for all of our nieces

#5  Take both of our families on vacation to Mexico for a week

#6  Buy two brand new cars (DH has always wanted a Tahoe and I want a minivan)

#7  Put the rest in the bank and live off the interest!

It was funny, but the thing we liked the most about winning was being able to order something off a menu at a restaurant without looking at the price.  DH has always wanted to order lobster at a nice restaurant, but never has since it is so expensive.

So, what are your dreams if you win the lottery...

    1) Pay off Debt - House, car, credit cards.......

    2) Buy a farm in this area and build our dream house

    3) Buy a vacation house somewhere else

    4) I probably wouldn't stop working, but I would change around what I do. Right now I find other people investment properties, and I think I would find myself investment properties instead.

    5) Have a baby. DH and I want a baby, but we aren't financially ready for one quite yet.

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh yeah, and pay off debt - that'd be first

    • Gold Top Dog

    1. Quit my present job.

    2. Maybe start a business or do charity work.

    3. Buy a new house. (Modest)

4.Give each of my three grown children an equal amount of money.

5.Set up college trust funds for my grandchildren.

    6. Invest in charity.

    7. Buy a vacation home, probably in the mountains. (Modest)

    8. I would basically live off of the interest. I would like to live basically the same type of life as now, it would just be nice not to have to worry about money and also to have a different job.

    • Gold Top Dog

Ooh, this is fun! I can't wait to spend this hypothetical money! Big Smile

    • Quit my job and be a SAHM
    • Buy a ton of land and build a house (not too crazy large, but super energy-efficient, solar/wind power, etc.)
    • Pay off auto loans
    • Set up trusts for baby/future kids
    • Give a bunch to family
    • Give to a local group that's trying to get a new animal shelter started up
    • Give to vizsla rescue and local vizsla club
    • Give to the senior center (they're trying to build a new one)
    • Give to Rupert's trainer so she can have a nice new facility
    • Give to local schools (and specify money has to be spent academically, art, music - not on sports programs)
Heck, I'd be happy winning just enough money to pay off our mortgage.

Buy my house and tell the current owners son to find his OWN basement to live in.

Buy my MOM'S house so that she doesn't have to worry about selling it to pay for assisted living OR worry about where to put all her stuff that she still has in said house.

    Get completely out of debt.

Buy a little place near Boston so I can spend baseball season coming and going at will.  And of course season tickets...box seats behind the Red Sox dugout.

OK, that's the selfish stuff.  Then I'll start a rescue where dogs can live out their lives in peace.  Perhaps start a group home for the homeless teens in our area, and definately do something with battered women.  My area could use a shelter and there is a hotel just sitting that could be easily converted, fully fenced off and I'm sure the empty restarant next door could be purchased for a kitchen, family room sort of facility.

     1. pay off debt

    2. move all liquid assets to the cayman islands, switzerland, or monaco.

    3. become a citizen of monaco or switzerland

    4. buy a house in either tuscany, umbria, or marche.

    5. give some to local rescue.

    6. help out my parents and my brother.

    not necessarily in that order.

     1.  Pay off student loans (about $100K right now).

     2.  Get a car (ours has major issues we cannot afford to fix, PLPD insurance because it's basically worthless).

     3.  Pay off my parents' home (and insist I inherit it in the will!  j/k).

     4.  Get ourselves a home (would probably wait on this b/c we plan to move quite far in a year and honestly I'm quite happy with our current rental).

     5.  Finish up some medical stuff we both need done but couldn't really afford (more testing for DH's epilepsy, some dental stuff for me)

     6.  Give money to my grandparents b/c my grandma recently had to be moved to a care facility and it costs $6500 a month, just for her.  Grandpa is still independent so he has to pay for another rent to live somewhere else.

     7.  Get my parents a new computer and my mom a new camera.  I bought her a camera for mother's day last year but it already broke!

     8.  Give some money to my sis for school and some to my bro to fix up his car.

     9.  Quit my job for now and volunteer at the Humane Society and doing more web design and computer repair for local non-profits.

     10.  Donate a boatload of mullah to the African Well Fund.

     11.  Take DH's family on a cruise or some exotic vacation.  They love getting together and doing stuff like that.

     12.  Put the rest in savings and other accounts like retirement, education funds for future children, possibly an education fund for my little cousin.

    • Set up trust or something to pay for future kids (maybe) college
    • Quit job and start my dog boarding business that I want to do
    • Invest!
    • Awesome vacations....I want to do Safari's and go to Ireland and Austrailia
    • Pay for Dad to go visit that country he wanted to when he was in the Navy (can't remember now) but didn't b/c his wife at the time (way before my time) wanted a divorce and he came back to try to fix things
    • Gold Top Dog

Oh I have this ALL figured out!

    Of course quit work!

Pay off my horse trainer/friend for all the kindness she has done for me!

Set up separate accounts one for DH (mad money) one for me, one for our home, one for bills, and one for the horses.

Buy at least 3 new horses (one show hunter, 2 jumpers A/O division)

Buy a piece of property with a pond. Build my dream house, horse barn, paddocks, outdoor riding ring, indoor dog agility facility with and outdoor area adjacent, attached indoor pool (for dock jumping) and another area for dog rehab with an underwater treadmill, and a swimming area too. The outdoor pond would have two docks for dock jumping, one regulation the other a puppy training dock. Of course we would have a human swimming pool too.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Geeze! I forgot my kids.

Oldest son is a very talented musician and I'd figure out a way to help him get into the business and have the career he's always wanted.  A house for him and his wife where ever they want one, and whatever else it takes for him to realize his dream.  And, a house for my youngest son as well and help him get started in his own business.

    • Gold Top Dog

     Quit current job.

    Pay off debts.

Donate land and buildings to PALS (www.palstherapy.org).

Build an indoor and outdoor agility facility that can support an agility trial for USDAA.

Do rescue work for BC rescue.

Buy a house with a pond and land for hiking in the woods.

Maybe do some doggie daycare on MY schedule as a business as well as continue with agility training.

Attend all the top agility seminars.  :D

Repay my dad all the money he's spent supporting me over the years.

Pay for my sister to have IVF so she can have a child.

Invest the rest and live off of interest.  :D
