Overweight Dogs

I had to go by Petsmart last night and while I was there I looked through the grooming window.  Inside was a "doodle" that was at least 30-40 lbs overweight.  I was ashamed and embarrassed for the owner.

I walk around with my furkid and everyone says he's too skinny-well he is right at running weight but could probably use 3 or 4 lbs.  If he was 10lbs overweight the majority of these people would still say he is skinny.

Joey has gained a few pounds, or at least looks it, over the last few months.  It could be because I've been very busy and have had no time for daily walks.  Infact, earlier this week I was 3 hours away in a hotel for 3 nights.  Or because I work for a pet product distribtor and am constantly getting free treats for him.  Or because he keeps eating the fruit pellets my cockatiel drops out of his cage.

Anyways,  he's not fat yet, but not definatly getting their. I'm a little embarresed to take him to my clients stores.  I'm afraid  they'll say something or think something.   So it's parks for Joey and I.  He had a walk today and a run in the dog park yesterday.

I don't need a lecture.  I've already cut back on his food.  Maybe he's come to the age where his matabolism has slowed down.

When we adopted Daisy in Jan, she had a little "junk in her trunk" - aka, she had a big butt.  LOL  I could never tell if it was just excess fur or fat.  I was obsessively feeling her ribs.  But now that she has been on the raw diet for a month or so, she is really slimming down.  No more big booty, her ribs are easy to feel and she just looks so much healthier - longer and leaner and more muscular.  I am very excited to see this.  Especially since I am quite overweight myself, the last thing I would ever want is to set that curse on my kids or pets.

I watched it, last night. I cried. I hate seeing pets so fat. The Rottie's owner made me want to do something I'd never consider. I cannot imagine WHY anyone would treat an animal like that.

When I got Teenie, she was obese. She weighed twice what she should. She lost 12 pounds, and 5 years in the course of a year. She acted younger and happier, as the weight came off. Her previous owners probably wouldn't even recognize this bouncy, active dog as the lethargic, dull dog that the knew. It makes SUCH a difference in their quality of life.

This is something that I pay very close attention to because Jack is a lab, and although labs are wonderful, they are not know for their lack of appetite.  Sally hasw a pretty high metabolism and if we do see her getting a tad too heavey we just up the exercise and feed her a *tiny* bit less and it's off (why can't I be like that?[8|]).  With Jack I have to be more careful, especially with this leg issue.

I was at Pet Supplies Plus with Jack some months ago and we met this *extremely* obese pug.  The poor thing was having so much trouble breathing I thought that she was in real danger of dropping dead just from the added excitment of greeting Jack...

Ohhhh, you met Myra - the extremely obese black pug that is not yet spayed.  The owner rescued it.  She is very poor. When I worked therec she was a regular customer.  We'd ocassionaly give her free dented cans.  The vet told her to get some pound of Myra, but the lady has a really tough time giving Myra tough love.  She feeds Alpo canned dog food.  Not much anyone can do.
