after much consideration we are just going to take his wire crate - its a beast but it collapses flat
I appreciate all the suggestions and do believe that in the future we might try a nylon crate for inside hotel rooms
this is definitely one of those times when I can see the advantage of a less than giant sized dog [8D]

I don't understand why so many of you say that the mesh crates can be chewed through in seconds to minutes. My very determined Border Collie mix has amesh crate and even after about 15 mins of non-stop scratching at the door she has yet to do anything more than rip two small (1 to 2" long) slits in the canvas and put some "runs" in the mesh itself - perhaps my crate is more durable than what everyone else has seen used? And this damage is from a dog that bends wire crates and chews up plastic door backstops in an airline crate btw.

    ......

The crate I use also has tie downs where you can use tent stakes to attach it to the ground, so if I had a jumper instead of a scratcher, I'd be sure to anchor the crate well.

I've been thinking the same all along.  Maybe we have the same crate?  I can't find my exact one on any web site, just similar ones, but they don't look as sturdy.  Like yours it is intended to be staked into the ground so I've never even considered that it would roll.  Mine was advertised as a camping crate, so yeah if you don't follow directions and leave it unfastened, it's gonna get knocked over pretty fast since it doesn't weigh a lot!

I have an Itz a Breeze Too crate - it's tan, but also comes in hunter green.

I bought one of those nylon crates.  I forget what kind now, but Tasha ripped through the screen in nothing flat at an agility trial.  I was warming up Kota and I hear shouting, "Loose dog, loose dog!" and I look up to see who's dog and it's mine!!!  I sewed the darn thing up again and was using it outside during practice and thought we were doing well with keeping Tasha in it.  Nope, one day, after multiple successes, she just ripped right through the front again.  What a waisted $120 bucks plus shipping.[:@]  So no more nylon for me.  Tasha even runs to her crate in the morning when we're leaving for work, so I KNOW she's crate trained.  She just didn't want to be left behind.

Kpwlee, if you're JUST going to use it in the hotel while sleeping, I see no reason not to invest and use in that fashion.  However, I would not trust him to be left alone in it unless you've done it before with success.  Someone told me that if you buy one at Petsmart and you're dog rips through it, you can get your money back, just take it back to the store.  And this is info from someone that DID IT, not second hand or anything.  Just my 2 cents.

I've seen destroyed itz a breeze crates.  I don't think that there is a soft crate out there that a dog can't get thru if they want to.

Oh I'm not saying that the crate is indestructible by any means as I know if Maggie was given more time to scratch it, she'd have it licked, but I was just saying that I found it odd that so many dogs apparently get out of crates in just a few seconds or minutes when that hasn't been my experience *at all*.

It's not that so many dogs get out of the crates but if they want to they can in a heartbeat.  I've even seen dogs that will unzip the zipper if it is not properly secured.
I've been using the same soft crates for 6 years with no problems but I know people that the first time they put them in one the dog destroyed the crate within 5 minutes.
