    nylon travel crates

anyone use these?  We go to a beach place and they require dogs to be crated when unattended (which we would do anyway) and in the past we have brought a metal one however due to its unwieldy size I'm thinking of getting one of the nylon/fabric ones
    Any recommendations

I have one that I got from Target.  My shih tzu can open it unless i tie the zippers together. She will also jump around the room in it [sm=lol.gif]
I still use it because it is so convenient (folds up into a little circle).  I just have to position it so she can't move it and tie the zippers.

I've seen the crate-looking versions at workshops, good for calm time for dogs. Ive seen pretty hyper dogs in them, and they seem to hold.

I'm curious about the doggy tents, seems they would have the added benefit of more shade and be cooler. I think they are as collapsible as the crates.

I'm not sure of it's exact material, but I bought a HUGE one a few years ago b/c it was 50% off.  We had a time when we thought we'd have to make a long car trip with our cats (like days), so I bought the biggest fabric dog crate available to cover the back seat, plenty big for three cats and their litter box.  The one I have collapses flat, so it's pretty convenient and portable.

This isn't it, but it's pretty close, and mine is blue

thanks everyone - Bugsy is very good in his crate now and it will essentially be used for sleeping (he always sleeps in his crate)
I'm thinking of one like this [linkhttp://www.petedge.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=6085&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=408&iSubCat=433&iSubSubCat=438&iProductID=6085]http://www.petedge.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=6085&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=408&iSubCat=433&iSubSubCat=438&iProductID=6085[/link]
we as always need the XL [:)]

I occasionally use them when we are at a indoor agility trial or where the crating space is limited.  They are great to use but for one thing.  They dog using it must be used to this type of crate and not paw at the sides.  If a dog wanted they could scratch their way out in about 5 seconds.  After all they sides are nothing more that screening materal.  I looked at the prices for the link you posted and that is a very good price if the framing is sturdy and doesn't break with usage.  Mine were made by Eezi-crate (which is no longer in business after the owner died) and are 7 years old.  I had to make sure that my dogs respected the crate before leaving them in there without constant supervision.

thanks - I'd love to see the material etc but no where around here carries any of them.  Bugsy is very good in his crate now - my biggest concern is that if there was a thread - anywhere - he'd find it and do what comes natural and destroy everything attached to the thread.  It is a real hassle bringing a 48x29x34 crate everywhere you go though [&o] so we'd like to try one of these truly portable ones.

Then a nylon foldable crate may not be for you.  Have you considered a plastic folding crate.  They are much lighter than the metal ones but much sturdier than the nylon crates.

Used to see them at our local big box pet store.  Really I haven't looked in a long time so I don't know if they even make them anymore.  I know some people that have them and really like them.

    I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THESE!!!!!!
why do you crate your dog while traveling?
    for its safety....am I right?
maybe for your safety as well...
so if safety is a concern...dont you want to provide the best safety?

and if you are in an accident or something similar where the safety of the crate now suddenly really means something....what good is a collapsable and flimsy nylon crate going to do you???
it is like putting a child in a safety seat without buckling the seat belts! It seems silly to me!
we travel with lashed and strapped hard side crates.
First the nylon ones are a rip off. They cost 1/2 as much to manufacuer and cost the same if not more than a plastic or metal wire crate...usually MORE than either of these two choices.
They do not provide and kind of safety beyond keeping the dog from walking around the vehicle...which you can do with a leash or a seat belt for 1/3 the money...or free if you already own a leash.
They are not as well ventilated as a wire mesh crate and only slightly better than the airline plastic style...

yes they are easier to deal with...but essentially you are wasting money and drastically reducing your dogs safety for the sake of making your life just a wee bit easier.
they seem a "not well thought out" option to me.

thanks for your input Rob - we have a safe and secure way to traNSPORT HIM - sorry for caps - what we need is a crate for in the room.  The hotel requires it.  He is crated at night - unlocked - and that is his preference.  This is a beach trip so he will be exhausted from playing all day - we went last year to the same place and KNOW he will be shattered.  What we are trying not to do is have to bring along his gigantic metal crate, which even collapsed is difficult to fit in a vehicle with him and other things too.  Uncollapsed a gutted van or open pickup would be the only option and thats not practical and I wouldn't cart him in the bed of a truck.
So again I appreciate your feelings/opinion but you seem to have got the wrong impression of how it would be used and the point of our using it

How would you make sure your dog respects the crate? my dogs respect their wire crates. But nylon? I don't know. It would sure make my life easier when we go to my parents house for the weekend. And it would help with my vehicle choices too.

Well he'd be in the crate when we are asleep so, last year he was so tired from being on the beach that his crate was a respite for him he went in and went asleep.  He loves his crate in general so I don't really see how this will be different - also we always have to cover his crate - his preference so I don't think the reduced visibility will be an issue either.  I'm about 90% sure we are going to try it - his wire crate is monstrous.  DH actually agreed the expenditure so I am just trying to find the biggest one I can!  All of them are about 6 inches shorter in length than his but are as high or higher and just as wide.
I was just hoping someone here had used them in a hotel or other when bringing the wire crate isn't possible.  Oh to have a small dog!
